What have I been up to lately? Well, my family has been involved in getting my mother-in-law into a residence where she has her own suite and is basically on her own, but has lots of care all around her, and doesn't have to cook any meals, if that is what she choses. There are nurses there, and she has an emergency lifeline, etc.

My mother-in-law does NOT want to be there. But she slips into reality and out. We visit her regularly, so that she has at least one of us coming to see her in her lovely suite two or three times a day. And then she calls us and asks why she has not seen us in two weeks!

My husband is going crazy, and his siblings are also at their wits' end. When I visit her, I find that she is coherent, and has good memory skills. But later, in the evening, my husband drops in for coffee, and she asks him what trick he will play this time.

** SIGH **

She keeps asking when she can go home, which is so painful for all of us. She took a fall just before Christmas, which rendered her in a country hospital for the last three months. We all realized that she would not be able to go directly home, due to the fall, so it was concluded that she should be in a lovely place where help was available twenty-four hours a day. She is slipping mentally away by the day....

Well anyhow, I hope that her medicines will help her, and that she listens to us and tries to get stronger. If she could get stronger, she could be able to manage her own affairs (cooking and such). But her mental state -- I am not sure if it is stress related or if it is from the onset of her senior years. She became a widow two years ago, and was rather depressed (understandably), and then that fall ...

Anyhow, I see her daily and only hope that things get better for her.

On another note -- I heard the geese back today. That is good on one note, and yet sad on another. Good to see a new fresh season approaching, but bad because the ducks and geese will settle back to their home on the duck pond that I have skated on almost daily (except when it was more than minus thirty below Celcius). No more ice skating outdoors! And the indoor arenas have ended their in-door skating just this past week, due to the season. Yeah, spring melt is here. Good and Bad.

Well, talk to you all later,

K♥z

I can't imagine much that must be harder to bear than to watch someone's personality slip away. My own parents suffered some physical traumas toward the end of their lives but remained lucid until their deaths.

As for the geese issue, have you thought of skating with a broom in hand as if you were curling?

So sad about your mother-in-law. Is she very old? I hope her final years are in peace.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all get old like Virgil’s mom!

Kiz, your family has made a wise decision. She'll be happier and, believe me, your family will be happier. It's a hard row to hoe, but you husband should be commended. Spring has sprung here, too. It's lovely and I'm ready for it.

No more skating, here, either =[. But due to the strange climate change we've had in Ontario, the geese don't leave in winter anymore.

Good luck with your mother in law... I don't think it's fair to you and your family to have to stress out over her, and be constantly looking after her, nor is it fair to her. I certainly hope that she'll be okay.

Ha ha, Prince! I needed that chuckle. But yeah, quite sad that I can't ice skate (and no, in-line skates don't quite do the same thing -- no swish of a blade on solid ice, no winter chill to put the blush in your cheeks, no air so cold that you can hear forever, etc.). Someone mentioned that maybe, just MAYBE, there is ONE rink left open year round (for hockey training purposes) ... I am on that quest now! .................................................. ................................................ NEW PARAGRAPH: Thank you, everyone, for your kind thoughts. We are doing everything possible to see that my M-I-L gets adjusted and has lots of visits. You should see how nice her place is, too! To answer Virgil: she is entering her 80's (more about her -- she is a tall, thin woman who broke her hip about eight years ago. She had the hip replaced, as a result. But then, she fell once more (two summers ago) onto her knee, and put her kneecap in a strange predicament. She was scheduled for a knee surgery, and naturally, that weak knee was basically the cause of why she fell. What a nightmare. She has never been the most stable woman (on her feet that is). Again, thanks for the nice wishes. -- K♥z

Kiz--here's hoping you can stay encouraged in your Grandma's life. Just take it one day/one visit at a time. I know it hurts watching the soul and spirit that us unique slip away. Hopefully God is whispering his care for her in her mind. Thinking of you and your cousin. Love Rich

I'm sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. That must be extremely hard. Best of luck to all of you.
    And the geese... CHASE! Bwaa-ha-ha!
