Promotion

Well, I have some news. I have received a promotion at Wally World. I will be leaving the store I work at in Branson, Mo and moving to the store in my town. I will receive a raise of a little over $9,000 a year and my bonus will be based on a higher percentage of sales/profit than it is now. Plus, it will take me about 5 minutes to get to work instead of the 45 minutes I drive one way now. That will save me $50+ a week in gas expense not to mention the wear and tear on my car. Also, I won’t be working overnight except on occasion. I am hopeful that this change will give me more time to spend with the kids and grandkids and Poppy. I will be obligated to stay at the store for a year.
I have to go back to Wal-Mart University for a few weeks and they are sending me to Oklahoma instead of a closer school they have in Springfield, Mo. I don’t know why they are doing this but whatever. I’ll be able to drive home on weekends and the company will pay the expenses for the trips. It’s only about 150 miles from here.
I am glad for the increase in pay but I dread coming back to this store. It’s not the same as where I am now. The Branson store is a small store and more of a family. Everyone, well most folks, gets along well and everyone works as a team, well most of the time. I feel bad because I will be leaving in the middle of a major remodel of our store and inventory is coming up in May. Inventory is a lot of detail work that I tend to do well. I believe they will survive without me, but I hate to leave them with so much going on.
The store I am going to is a Supercenter. I worked there for seven years before I transferred to Branson so I will know most folks here. I know what to expect from my bosses, too. Expectations are higher and the sense of urgency more pronounced. Details are important to the store manager. The difference in sales isn’t that much between the two stores and I believe it’s because of the focus on the customers at Branson. Most importantly, there won’t be any poem nights or anything like that at the new store.
At every meeting we have at Branson, I always tell the associates to “Give peace a chance” or “come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together and try to love one another” or something that makes them laugh. When it’s not busy, I get all the cashiers to sings Blue Suede Shoes or I’m a Believer or There’s a Hold in the Bottom of the Sea. The Branson customers love it. I don’t think such things will fly here. Instead of three days off a week I’ll only have two, but the work days won’t be as long. I’ve had so much fun working in Branson. I hope I can find a way to make it fun here too. If not, that’s ok. I can do anything for a year.

One year, it will pass faster than you think. I'm proud of your promotion. You'll be back at the branson store straight away!

Hoooraaayyy!! Conratulations Granny. The drop in commute time alone would be a reason to celebrate (I wish I only had a five minute commute), but you should be proud of the promotion and extra money that comes with it. You obviously did a great job and have all the skills to be a top notch manager. You can't teach certain skills and no matter how smart some people are they just don't get it when it comes to managing. I don't understand why only one year. Retiring or going back to the old store?

One other thing on a separate note. I saw there wasa lot of flooding around your part of the country yesterday. Some people even died. I hope you weren't effected and everyone is safe and sound.

Congratulations on the promotion and I hope the resettling in goes well. I always the first few weeks going in until I get comfortable in the environment. Ah yes--customer personalized service vs the supercenter--get them in and get them out mentality. God bless your work.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. Virgil, I have to obligate myself to the position for a year before I am able to transfer without losing money. If the store here is like it was when I left, I'll only be here for one year. If it has improved, I'll hang around until I can retire.....that's a least a decade.(I'm not as old as I feel, ya know. )

I am late as usual. You've already gone on to another entry. But Congrats!! The shorter commute is a real positive with the price of gas these days.

Well, I'm sure you will make it better. You're the type of person that brings out the best in people.
