Pygmalions of the Computer Age

Rate this Entry
Pygmalion as you all know (what do you mean you don't know?! You are on a literature forum after all! ) was the legendary Greek Sculptor who fell in love with the woman he carved out of ivory. He loved her so much that the Goddess Aphrodite took pity on him and granted her life. They then married and had a son and lived happily ever after

Pygmalion has become a metaphor for the Creator falling in love with the Created and this metaphor has been explored by writers and artists throughout the centuries.

Modern day Pygmalions are found amongst the computer geeks of this world. In their world of CGI (that's computer generated images for those who don't know;-)), they are carving their versions of Galatea, not out of ivory but out of pixels and giving them life in Cyber Space.

Here is few. What you make of them? End of models and actors? End of cinema as we know it? You have seen Goloum in The Lord of the Rings? That seems ages ago now! This is future!

Wow, very cool Lote. Virtual models! Won't it put the model industry out of business?

They won't put models out of business until they learn how to walk down the runway, but they could make life difficult for some actresses.

Don't worry Virgil, "Real" models will still be around to be tea ladies and secretaries in large Engineering Firms but obviously they will lose their Diva like statuses and off course the catwalk itself but I jest Virtual Models no doubt will be a challenge to real models and perhaps the power structure may change for them just like steam locomotive changed the power structure of horse drawn carriages

(and Pete they are called catwalks and not runways ;-) and animation has come a long way to perfect that )

Hue was the favorite of the three--then Hollywood--the last no major yearning to have tea with her--sorry.

Are you kidding? The average age of a secretary where i work must be over 50. And actually last year we got for the first time in my life, to my complete shock, our first male secretary. He might be the best looking of the group.
