Defining greatness

Rate this Entry
Theyve started the old argument up again who is the greatest living engllish writer? But I always thing greatness is subject tive isnt it especially about somthing like art so How do you define greatness, on sales, on literty value, and who is to say what has literay value and who doesnt? On uniqness, or creativity on LOL factor?? On how many theve churned out?

Its rather hard .
And then to top it off we get given little leaflets to give out 10 books you cant live with out , and my coworker we will call her Terri because of her fondness for Pratchet books and I both pointed out its a stupid thing to ask. becasue if it were a list of 10 books we were glad we had read , maybe we could answer it but then agin then we would have read somthing else and whose to say we would have found those quite as good.

So how do we define greatness, can it be measured at all or is it rather somthing that we know somehow? and do we all know the same .
Is greatness like colours then, somthing we all agree exsist but we can never be sure we see them quite the same?

Greatness? Hmm...Obviously, you'll get the same old saying that "It all depends on your perspective..." I'm tired of that...So here's my perspective...Greatness is when you help someone in any way possible. Greatness in when you help someone without knowing who and/or what they even look like. Greatness is when you work to benefit others. Greatness is...Nightshade.

Greatness is, in a way, nobility. True nobility is always recognized, as in, say, the painting of George Washington at Valley Forge, praying. The painting shows the man praying. It shows his nobility by showing his humility, that he knew he couldn't lead America to victory on his own, and, of course, a great man would not be full of pride.
