Holidays

I do believe that holidays are not so much celebrated by taking a day off from school or work simply for recognition; I think that the average human has a need to take unscheduled breaks once in a while to not only break the regular cycle and avoid becomind bored but also to allow true spare time for personal growth...because so many of us lately fill up our "spare time" on the weekends or after school and work with activities which are or we feel are necessary, such as reading/watching the news, cleaning, engaging in regular social events (even if it is online), etc.
Holidays are different than weekends in that we usually find a pattern in which to spend our weekends. For example, most Saturdays my boyfriend gets up and begins cleaning the house, cutting the bush that is constantly treatening to overtake the house, helping his grandmother next door with projects or heavy lifting she needs help with, and any miscellaneous favors he has been asked to perform. I usually wind up helping in some way in between homework assignments. Sundays are our "free day," which he usually spends sleeping in until 12, sitting and chatting with his mother on the balcony into the afternoon, and then going to bed early for work the next day. I wake up earlier than him...so my chat with his mother lasts longer, though I may go into the room before him to finish up any assignments that still need to be done.
So, "weekends" get filled with other necessary or relaxing activities. Holidays, on the other hand, are at times when one would normally be at school, work, or doing whatever else it is they do. Today is a holiday for me, Verteran's Day, and while I have yet to call my grandfather, a Veteran of the Vietnam War, I have definitely been reaping the benefits of a day where I don't have to do homework (because the weekend is scheduled time for that) and I truly have nothing to do. I have been spending the day reading about "feral children," which I beforehand knew nothing about, and which I began google-searcing after reading the term in a magazine.
I've learned a little, I've been watching Animal Planet and been following the story of over 100 Bengal cats, and I'm recovering from yesterday's 3-mile run (which I finished, but with a not-so-impressive 40 minute time). If I had school tommorow, I would feel delightedly refreshed and relaxed and just a tad more knowledgable after this randomly scheduled break, but since there isn't, I will instead be prepared for my upcoming weekend, which will no doubt include it's own trials...
Happy blogging!
