Just a Bunch of Thoughts

Rate this Entry
I have had a bit of blogger's block lately. I just haven't been able to think of anything to write here or any poems or short stories. I think my mind had frozen up or something. But reading Virgil’s blog made me think about our kids learning to drive. I taught our son to drive but Poppy taught the girls. He had more patience with the girls and I had more with the boy. Our two younger ones couldn’t wait to get their permits and start driving. Motherhubbard seemed as if she couldn’t have cared less. She never said anything about taking the exam. In Arkansas you can take the written test and get a permit to learn and drive with an adult, licensed driver until you are 16. Then you go back and take the driving part of the test. Well, Tonya took the written test the summer she turned 16 only because we needed another driver in the family. That’s the year I went to work full time and I couldn’t do the two hours worth of driving them around every afternoon. Anyway, Poppy took her to take the written test while I was at work at the Police Department as a radio dispatcher. So, she passed the test and Poppy let her drive home. She called me from home and I asked how she did. She says, “I passed the test and Dad let me drive home but I took out a fence on the way.” She was very calm and well, I thought she was kidding and then I got really busy and we hung up. Later Poppy called to tell me she passed the test but that we were going to have to buy the old lady who lived on the corner a new fence! She really had taken out a fence at a neighbor’s house and if she hadn’t stopped when she did, she would have gone off a 10 foot drop-off that the fence was bordering! I called Tonya back and she was crying. I asked if she was alright and she said, “Yeah, but you didn’t believe me!” Poor girl. She was also upset because it scared the older lady who owned the fence and Tonya was worried that she would have a heart attack. I didn’t ride with Tonya much when she was learning to drive for some reason. Now every time we pass the fence we say, “There’s Tonya’s fence.”

I have had strep throat three times since Thanksgiving Day. I spent 4 days in the hospital because of it starting the Sunday after Thanksgiving. I've taken so much medicine that I think I'll turn into a antibiotic pill or shot. Now the doctor tells me I have to have my tonsils out. At my age!! I just don't think this is fair. When I was a kid, I was sick all the time with my tonsils and my Mother never had them taken out, as suggested by several doctors in my growing up years, because she was afraid I'd die on the operating table. A boy I went to school with died having his tonsils out when we were in the second grade so she was sure it would happen to me. I've never had an operation and I don't really want one now. Once it starts and all that. Getting old is not much fun right now. Anyway, it'll be April at the earliest before the ear, nose, and throat doctor can do it so I'm pretty pleased with that.
Well, maybe this bloggers block will lift now. Be good.

This was funny about Tonya's fence! Once I drove into the wall of my parents' house.
This is nice that in the US you can learn to drive with your parents! It would have been much better for me. Here in France you have to learn with a professional person first during hours and hours before you can drive with your parents. I hated to learn with a professional because I was too shy and I made mistakes because of that, and they were not always patient with me. I didn't want to learn to drive anyway but I'm glad I did it and that I have my license now because it is really useful.

I forgot about that fence. Dad was so calm and cool about it. I got out and as soon as I stood up I fell to the ground- My legs were like Jello. Then I realized there was that drop off! We drove a giant boat of a car at that time. I was the last person in my drivers ed class to get the permit. I'm still glad I don't have to drive much.

Sorry to hear that your tonsils have to come out. But the upside of it all is that you won't be sick as often, so that is good. As for the hitting of the fence, sorry M-H, but that was very amusing. But don't feel bad -- when I was fresh off the press, with my permit still hot in my hands, I borrowed my brother's 1967 Candy Apple Red Mustang. I backed into a fence. Thats all I'll say.... so, as the saying goes ****happens...
