Why are so many people bothered by sex?

Rate this Entry
Well this is something that I have come acorss on more then one occasion, and not just here, but other places as well, and everytime it continues to baffle me. Of course a certain topic within these forums are what brought it to mind again, but I did not want to post there, becasue I did not want to come off the wrong way. Everyone is intitiled to thier own feelings and opinions, and I really do not mean to argue with them for that, but well it is on my mind so I thought I would just rant about it in my blog.

I do not really understand why people seem to freak out so much about the appereance of sex in books or movies. Perhaps such things may not be truly nesscary for the story, but I have never really been phased or bothered by thier appereance. For me it is just like, yes, there are people having sex, that is what people have been doing sense the begining of human exisistince, and it is what ever living thing does in some capcity or another.

For me sex is just a natural act, that is nothing something that should offend people, or disturb them. Granted not everyone might want to be exposed to unexepcted grotutis sex, but unless something is acutal pornography, wheather in a book of a movie, even if it is graphic, it cannot be that bad.

Of course if it is done within the context of a book or a moive, it might not be all that realistic, and it might be made over the top, but then again, is not everything in movies and books dramatized to some degree or another? So why should sex be any different.

Perhpas it is just a religious difference, as I do come from a beleif system that is historicaly known for being more liberal when it comes to the carnal nature of man.

I have just never been able to fully wrap my mind around people have the OMG reaction to sex.

I'll tell you a little secret. The books and movies never get it right, it is really just gratuitous. When its appropriate for a story its fine, but when its thrown in there and not part of the story, it detracts from the whole essence of the story. I feel the same way about violence.

To give you an example. The movie 'The Departed'...first let me state I loved it. Anyways, there is a love triangle in it, that is really psychologically intense...but its not overdone, and it works in the movie. When it comes to violence in the movie... It was violent the entire way through, but the end was over the top, killing off all of the characters. I think this excellent movie was actually flawed due to the ending. Anyways, thats my two bits.

Cannot that be said about just about anything in books and moives? I have seen and read a lot that are not how they acutally happen in real life. That is kind of the point of books and moives to get away from normal reality.

but when its thrown in there and not part of the story, it detracts from the whole essence of the story.
For me that would depend. If it was just a few scenes scattered here or there, even if they did not aid the story per sae, my whole reading exeprince would not be distracted by the apperacne of sex. If it was like every other page, that would be distracting.

I am in no way bothered by sex. I am not even offended. Just sometimes authors or filmmakers use it in their stories unnecessarily. For example, I was watching this really good war film. I cannot think of the name of it at all right now (I have been blank with so many things lately!). Anyway, it was a really good story. Then, really out of nowhere, this man is having sex with this woman. I don't know what it had to do with the story. I really didn't care to watch them in "the act". It was just completely pointless to me. I just remember that I was really enjoying the film until then. It remained a good picture. But why was that necessary to include in the story when it didn't help the story along at all? That is really my only major issue with it. The unnecessary inclusion. That is all. By the way B, thanks for telling me the ending to "The Departed"!!

    Yes, that is understandable

Enemy at the Gates comes to mind, and I fully agree that the scene was completely pointless.

Well, I will still watch it. After all, why watch a movie adaptation of a novel when you already know the ending? Considering that you've read the book before you've seen the film, of course.

That's the movie! I could remember who was in it but not the name! Anyway, another film that did that was "Joyeux Noel". That is based on the truce at Christmas during WWI. I couldn't believe they threw that scene in there!

I'm not bothered by sex in proper settings. It is natural. But I think that when it comes across TV into people's homes I can't help but feel it's unwarrented. It violates public decency, like someone walking around nude in public. I don't find it gratuitess in novels, but that may be a function of the novels I read. I do think it is gratuitous in movies. And those stupid TV sit coms are getting rediculous. Every other sentence is a sex joke. In it's proper place, sexuality in art is not wrong. But I think we've gone too far.
