Greetings friends of past and future. I have long resisted entering the blogging world mostly because I didn't have the first clue what to do with such a thing, but this morning I thought to myself, "why not give it a whirl?" so here I am making my first blog attempt. Probably most people who give this thing a glance will know me from the forums, but for those who don't, I'm a PhD candidate specializing in Renaissance literature and pretty crazy about all literature, poetry especially. My university is in Chicago but my family's in California, so I spend my time divided between those two places accompanied by my trusty pet bird, Spenser. Currently it's California where I'm taking an extended break to rest my brain after my exams and try to think up a dissertation topic.

Well, so far so boring. I promise I'll think up something more interesting to do with this thing than tell a dry version of my life story. I've titled it Petrarch's Love: Renaissance Woman with the idea that this blog will be something like the showcase of varied talents associated with the Renaissance Man, only written by a woman (and not really at the talent level of say, Leonardo). As such, I'll be making posts on poetry (both my own and thoughts on that by others), art, knitting, music etc. For right now, though, just starting the blog has been exhausting enough, so I'll sign off and go contemplate what to post next. Thanks for stopping by.

OOhhh Hubba Hubba, we now get to peer into the mind of the very attractive and Leprechaun friendly (dare I say contest winning) Petrarch's Love. I don't know who Petrarch is, but he is a lucky man....Anyways, Great introduction to the blogs. I think you'll like it. It takes a while to find yourself, most people haven't blogged before. Be patient, and say hi when you think of it. Cheers, B

Ah welcome to the blogging world Petrarch. Nice to see you here. Hey, do you take Spencer back and forth to California? You take him on a plane?

Welcome aboard and hope to hear a bit about the Renaissance writers--enough to perk the curiousity perhaps to try someone new perhaps.

    Thanks guys.

B-Mental-- I'm sure Petrarch would consider himself much luckier if he hadn't been dead the last 600 years or so. (My user name is in reference to the 14th century Italian poet whose muse was a woman who shared my real life name).

Virg.--Yes, I travel with Spenser on the plane. You have to pay extra to take the pet on board, and I have to take him out of his cage and carry him through the metal detector at security, but other than that he's a great flier.

Mt.Spur--Glad to have you reading. I'll certainly have to work up some posts about some of my favorite Renaissance works.

Wow a bird flying in a man made bird. Seems weird. I wonder what Spencer is thinking? "Boy, it's nice to rest my wings."

My sweet lord! Phd and interested in Knitting

    How does that work?

Only a woman can combine the two?

Every time I think of renaissance - I think of Leonardo Da Vinci - are the any renaissance woman?

Yes, there's a whole knitting circle made up of literature PhD students in my department here. It's a great hobby for someone who reads a lot. My blog title was meant as a play on Leonardo Da Vinci's title of Renaissance Man but, yes, there were also some pretty famous Renaissance women. Queen Elizabeth I of England, for example. Thanks for reading.

You can read while you knit? You can knit one handed? I did not know that!
But it must be a great skill

Did you know that Renaissance men and women never bathed?

No, I don't knit one handed. I use a book weight to hold the pages of the book open, leaving my hands free to knit. You don't have to look down much while you're knitting because it's mostly done by touch, which is what makes it perfect for reading. I do have to keep a running stitch count in the back of my mind if I'm doing a color or lace pattern, but that's pretty easy to do once you get the hang of it.

Well, this Renaissance woman does bathe...as did the original Petrarch's love it would appear, given the sonnets he wrote on the subject of her bath time.
