THE DAY OF THE REALM

Fifty years after the day of severance came the day of the realm. A group of weary nomads set upon the ruins that once were the great city of the sultan and his people. The ruins stood as a silent testament to an almost forgotten evil, but the travellers did not find evil. Instead they found a young boy, no more than five years old. He walked amongst the ruins, alone. The travellers took in the boy, but he would not leave the ruins, stating that he would not leave his family, his keeper, or the future. The nomads, weary themselves of the arduous life they lived, and seeing the ruins as a good place to settle down and form a community, decided that they too would stay. The fresh water from the wells, the ample food from the restored fields, and original splendour and wealth of the city all served to provide the former nomads with a prosperous future. It was the re-emergence of the realm, and for fifty years, it prospered. During those years, there was uncovered a closed tomb under the sands. The men dared not enter it; their children knew the tomb only for its ability to sap the warmth from their bodies if they played too near. It was decided that the tomb would be guarded against all that would threaten its seal and ward of evil spirits. Each day, two guards would stand at the door guarding the entrance.
