My Favorite Piano Pieces

Rate this Entry

Please meet Valentina Igoshina, virtuoso

Our good friend, Lote did a blog entry on the music he enjoys, so I thought that I'd follow suit. However, I am going to stick to piano solo music (this time round). Classical orchestration and other musical addictions I have shall be saved for another entry ...

I am an intermediate/advanced (depends on the day, ha ha) pianist. I can thank the generosity of my parents who believed in my abilities and kept me in lessons for a few years. As well, I had an awesome teacher who is no longer with us, but her memory lives on every time I play a piece as she would have wanted it. She also instilled in me the love for Chopin, I never really believed that I could play him, but anyhow...

The following selections are probably my most beloved. I play all but the Fantasie Impromptu -- that one is just beyond my grasp ... perhaps Jamesian can vouch for the tricky timing of the piece, along with incredible finger jumping for people who have not been blessed with long fingers (i.e. moi) ... (I mention Jamesian, as he is a fellow fan of Chopin, didn't his avie give you the clue, lol)

Debussy's Clair de Lune, played by Lívia Rév:

Chopin's Nocturne No.20 Op. Posth. (from the movie "The Pianist"), played by Dariusz Grabowski

When I hear someone else play this one, I always get choked up -- it is just one of those pieces ...

Chopin's Piano Sonata No.2 Op.35 - Marche Funèbre, played by Valentina Igoshina:

Please note that at 2:39 is probably the most beautiful music Chopin ever wrote -- smack dab in the middle of the Marche Funèbre, I played that during the Offering at our Church once ... [scary times, maybe another blog entry]

Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu Op.66, played by Valentina Igoshina:

My dentist plays this one -- caught him at the piano store in the city when my hubby and I were shopping for the Pramberger piano that I wound up getting (thanks hubby dearest, promise good meals from now on, honest...) **crosses fingers**

So that is enough for now, hope that you get a chance to listen to the pieces, because when I hear them played, I just smile and think that life really isn't that bad. Not bad at all...

Till next time,
Karalynne

Kiz...I could hear it from all of them...I think it's because B's in the middle of the ocean or something...

I checked them and they all played. You were right--I liked the Funeral March the best.

I already know those pieces and hearing them again is quite pleasing to the ears. Really quite good. But what of the Etude Op. 10, No. 12 in C minor? The revolutionary. I love that one.I'm also fond of Für Elise by Beethoven. (and a whole lot more, but those 2 were the first to come to mind)

Nice choices except perhaps for the Debussy piece. I don't know why, but it must be me. I always find Debussy boring. His works seem so static. They never seem to go anywhere.

Thanks, everyone for listening and commenting Aimus -- If I could have listed ALL my Chopin faves, you guys would have tuned out due to overload (yes, the Ballades 1-4; the Heroic Polonaise in A-flat major; his haunting Prèludes -- the Raindrop one comes to mind; the list goes on!). Virgil, I guess we all have our thoughts on Debussy -- some of his stuff is more modernistic-sounding, takes some getting used to, for sure. But the one I posted, Clair de Lune to me is sheer poetry -- in that I actually feel and see the ocean.... Anyhow, it IS true, music can calm the savage beast (unless you have Negative Creep ~~ Nirvana, blasting ... but that is my other side...)

I loved the Marche Funèbre most of all. It's just so beautiful. Even though I love violins more than pianos.

This might amuse you for for me another example of God in the details. Saturday I'm watching the last episode of Rawhide Season 2 Pt 2 and Clint Eastwood's character Rowdy is entering a room where an English gentleman is playing--Chopin--though he fails to identity which piece. And since I read your blog last nice I took it as a sign that God is intrested in the minute things in my life. Timing is everything.

None of these played beyond 34 seconds for me! I have been having trouble with YouTube lately anyway. Also, my computer has been acting a little difficult today. So I will have to try these again later. Hopefully I will be able to hear them then!

Very soothing music, Kiz. If only I could play paino that well. I miss my friend who used to play music with me. He could play anything they wrote. You soothed my day!

Kizz - you tube is being mean to me. I might have to switch and check them out in IE rather than AOL. (Sometimes that will make them play). In the meantime, do you have any recordings of yourself? I'd love to hear you play rather than some strange old woman I don't know.
