This was inspired by Shardik by Richard Adams (The other book was good, but a little more fantasy..)
There once was a man that sat upon a mountain. He was alone, but not lonely. The sun burned brightly, but this man sat there among the rocks smelling the sage and whatever smell came along. It was all a very pleasant thing. He sat there and the capricorn came and said "Hello". He nodded, and the mountain goat slowly walked away. It stopped and looked back slowly. "I can see you are very busy right now".
"I am" the man replied. The goat looked at him sadly, and asked "May I ask you Why are you so busy doing nothing right now?" The man laughed.
"If you must know... I sent my people to another planet. I did this, and then I wandered all over this planet looking for the things I still needed. I didn't want to forget anything."
"Are you done yet?", the goat queried.
"I think so..." the man said. "Wait a second, did you want to come along?"
The goat faltered for a second and then said, "I don't think so, I am very content right now..."
"Ok, say Goodbye to your people for me."
"I will." the goat replied.
The man got back to thinking, and he thought long and hard. He climbed down from the mountain, and on the way down the mountain he came accross a bear...a Grizzly to be precise. The Grizzly was busy scavenging huckleberries, but slowly ambled accross the mountain valley. They had met many months ago as the man was making sure he had everything.
"Are you going?" the bear asked. The man nodded and said, "I have one of you." The Grizzly then said, "May I taste you again before you go? I really want to remember you." The man smiled and nodded.
"Yeah me too, but we will meet again." He then cut himself, and said to the Grizzly. "I will share this with you. I will put some of my blood on these very rocks. Come by and smell them when you miss me. In a very long time some people like me may come back. I'll tell them to look for you." The man offered his blood and the Grizzly licked it for a long moment. It licked it again, and again. It breathed heavily as the man smiled and laughed.
"Man that is a flavor I am really going to miss." It then pulled itself up, and gave the man a big gentle bear hug. They sat a while, and enjoyed the cool mountain air. "Go now," the bear said, "before I begin to weep." The man started to walk, and then turned and asked the bear.
"Would you walk with me for a while?"
"Ohh, what a splendid thought. Yes, I will. I will come only so far..." They both laughed and smiled, the man sang to the bear a couple of songs he had liked to share, and the moon slowly set through a cool, cool night.
