The Autograph Album

Rate this Entry

When I was a young girl, I got this corny gift from my favorite auntie. It was an Autograph Album, like an 'official' kind of album, complete with a zipper that zipped it up, containing pastel coloured sheets.

So I decided to make use of this unusual gift (I thought, because I didn't know any famous people). I zealously got everyone and anyone to sign this crazy thing. My parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, classmates, doctors, the minister, and so on.

Well, a few years have stood between the last time I opened that corny little book, and now. When I opened it and flipped through it, I saw the light-hearted comments that my schoolchums of then had carefully signed for me. There was a little almost-love poem from a crush at the time (sweet!), I saw a thoughtful verse from my now departed grandmother, a well wish from "J", who recently left this plane, and a whole lot more. My eyes misted a little as I flipped through that entire little book of memories.

I am glad that my auntie gave me that wonderful little gift, it was very thoughtful of her. She'll never know.

SIGNing off for now,

Kizzo

[p.s. That album in the photo was one I Google'd, I don't have a digital camera to take a photo of my album, and I didn't want to wait either.]

Thats cute Kiz. My aunt has always kept a guest book. She lives in Montana, and many people would come and visit. It was always tradition to write a line or two (a whole page sometimes). Every now and again when people came to visit or celebrate we would flip through the pages and read aloud the passages, comments, or words of wisdom left. It was always a lot of fun, and would guide a conversation late into the night. I think that your aunt gave you a wonderful gift. Cheers, B

Oh, Kiz, those are grand! I have something somewhat along the same lines; a sticker book dating "way back when" I was eight. I loved stickers then and still remember getting some of the individual stickers. The album is a lovely gift indeed!

I got an autograph book in the second or third grade from Disneyworld (I think - it had some cartoon on it) and I had no idea what to do with it either, so like you, I went around and had people sign it like teachers and relatives and friends.

It had pastel pages and plain white pages and there are two entries I remember perfectly. On one, my third grade French teacher (I don't remember any French btw) wrote: On this page of whitest white, I got hungry and took a bite. And she tore a piece out of the corner and drew an arrow pointing to it.

And my aunt did one also:

    I auto laugh
    I auto cry
    I auto sign
    my auto graph

Except, every where that you see auto, she drew a little car and since I can't replicate that with my keyboard, you'll just have to just have to imagine.

But anyone kizzo, thanks for the entry - it brings back some memories for me. I haven't thought of my autograph book in ages.

In Junior High everyone would get one of those autograph books and we would all sign each others. It was the thing to do. I bet my mother must still have it somewhere. Did anyone else have that custom when approaching graduation of some sort?
