Sci Fi Story

the dreaded 3 words

Rate this Entry
Well, I started to read Norman Mailer's 'The Castle In The Forest' today. Its a fiction about Adolf Hitler's youth. I love Mailer's books...or should I say I used to. Yes, I've read nearly all of his books, but now I hesitate before I pick up one of his books. Its all Harlot's fault.

These days, I flip to the back of Norman's books...instinctively. Thats how you react after you get burned. I had picked up 'Harlot's Ghost' and read avidly through it. The story of a young spies career in the CIA around the world. It was written so well, I must admit, that I was smitten. Well until the final three words were read.

I'd read a 1200 page book, a true pageturner, that ended...

"To Be Continued"

*sigh* there has yet to be written the subsequent stories, and I've since lost faith.

Wow, I've never met anyone that really liked Norman Mailer's books. I don't mean to be contentious B-M, but I've never cared for him. Did you actually read that huge Egyptian novel he wrote? Anyway, I did see a review of this recent book, and I'm afraid it wasn't all that positive. But the reviewer was also predisposed to be against Mailer. Don't let any of this disuade you from enjoying it. Let us know what you think of it.

I am definitely in agreement on this new novel, its dretch. I think its just a little more than one can chew. A list of Mailer's books that I liked...Executioner's Song, Dead Men Don't Dance, Barbary Shore, The Naked & The Dead, Why Are We In Vietnam, and I do like some of his essays.
