Trick or Treats

Halloween is awesome! I took motherhubbard’s 4 children to Trick or Treat last night and we had a blast. First of all I have to explain about the kids and Trick or Treat. They usually go to their church for a Halloween party and/or Trunk or Treat. Mason, the five year old, had never actually been out in a neighborhood to Trick or Treat. When we left my house he asked where we were going.
Me: We’re going to Trick or Treat.
Him: Where?
Me: In the neighborhood where your Mother used to go.
Him: What will we do?
Me: We will go to the houses, knock on the door, say Trick or Treat, and they will give you candy.
Him: Why?
Me: Because it’s Halloween.
Him: What do we have to do for the candy?
Me: Just yell “Trick or Treat”.
Him: Why would they give us candy?
Me: Because it’s Halloween.
Him: For free?
Me: Yes.
Him: Are you sure?
Me: Yes.
Him: You are trying to joke me?
Me: No, this is for real.
Him: Really? They give us candy for free?
Me: Yes.
Him: Do you promise? For free?
Me: I promise.
Him: (to his sister) Is she joking me?
Sister: No, it’s really true.
Well, it took us forever to convince him that he could really get free candy just by knocking on some stranger’s door and saying “Trick or Treat”. He was a little wary until about the third time. Then he knew I wasn’t just playing a joke on him. He had a blast.
Him: Granny, when can we do this again?
Me: Next year at Halloween.
Him: How long is that?
Me: It’s a whole years, when you are 6.
Him: That long? A whole year? I don’t think I have enough candy to last that long.
We are very lucky to live where we do and to know so many people in town.
Most of the houses we visited were in our old neighborhood and belonged to people we have known for years, houses that my kids went to on Halloween.
It was such fun to watch them having such a good time.
They each had their own Treat or Treat style. Mason was in awe of all the candy he was getting, ready as soon as it hit the bottom of his bag to head to the next house. Chaney, the 8 year old, was there for the candy and to visit. She told everyone how much she appreciated the candy, how lovely their house was decorated, and how she would come back next year. Max, the 2 year old, was in it for the candy alone. “Treat or Treat” and “Thank you” and on to the next house. Bailey was just plain having fun. We are planning next years costumes and checking the map to get a better route planned out. I can’t wait!
