Its been so long since I was last offshore. I stopped working in the Gulf of Mexico region in 2001. That was the old days with no internet or sattelite coverage offshore. I would spend my time reading, practicing harmonica, eating and sleeping. The work hasn't changed, but the technology sure has. Internet is now available, and my coworker has a miniature sattelite for his teeny little TV. His whole kit fits in a small briefcase.
Anyways, there isn't too much to do on the job, so I'm still reading. Finished Leon Uris' first book "Battlecry". Its a very dated semi-autobiographical story about several marines that had joined up just following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. I actually liked it very much. He catches the phraseology of the marines, and the vernacular of the era quite well.
Presently reading Umberto Eco's 'Baudolino', which is set circa 1200 and follows the life story of a young peasant that is adopted by Frederick the Great ,aka Barbarossa. Anyways, still getting through, but I love the way Eco writes. He deftly includes historical fact into his writing, and it is quite accurate in many points. Want some interesting reading, read about all of the persons nicknamed 'Barbarossa' Redbeard on Wikipedia. Its pretty interesting, and they all lived such unbelievable lives.
Anyways, its good to be working again, and my threshold for life offshore is back to the tolerable level. Now, if I could just get my football teams to win.
