People Watching

I started this entry last night, but decided that I was too tired to write it. So, here we go again:lol:
I'm not one to really talk about my job, because... well, it is a pretty boring job. I stand in the same aisle (sp?) in a grocery store, and I get to tell people about dog food. Oddly, I don't hate my job as much as I ought to. It is really dull, but I love to watch the people go by. Since I was a kid, I've always been a big fan of people watching, as I like to call it. I guess it's a bit like bird watching, but I do it with people.
The grocery store is a great place to just watch the people go by. You see little old men tagging after their wives as they are scolded to hurry along. You see the little kid whose mom didn't put them in the cart running away down a busy row. You even see couples arguing over which product they should buy, and I often see one person in a group asking if they are ready to go yet. My favorite to watch are the mothers who have a lot of kids. We have carts there that will seat up to four children, but sometimes you will see a mom come through with 5 or six kids in tow. One woman yesterday was shopping with five children and she was pregnant with a sixth. All I can think is that she is a brave and very patient woman. I can't make it through the store with only my two:) I also like to see the people out shopping with their teenage kids. Sometimes they are helpful, and other times they are making it take much longer to get the shopping finished just to entertain themselves. Either way, I love to watch how everyone is interacting with one another.
I'm constantly amazed when I work at the range of kindness that people exhibit. My job is not what I would call busy, and much of my time is spent asking people how their day is going. I am saddened at the amount of people who do not even have the kindness to answer. Some people are very nice, and I'm always happy to see them each weekend. One gentleman comes through each week to ask if I'm behaving and hit on me in the fashion the many older men do. Now, I don't use old lightly in this sense. He is likely sitting at about 90 years old, and he is on a oxygen tank that comes through the store with him. I'll not have this job for too many more months, but I worry that he will just not show up one weekend. I think I would be sad if this w as the case, because he is such a cheer to my own days that I can't help but feel some affection. Another regular couple is too funny. The wife is always seeming embarssed that her husband likes to come down the row just to tease me about being busy and say hello. They're both really sweet, and I love to see them on the weekends they visit as well. The last person I want to mention comes to the store every day. I've yet to discover why he shops each day, but he will be there on both Saturday and Sunday when I work. He is always wearing a navy blue pair of pants and shirt, so it looks like he is a mechanic. He comes through carrying a cartoon he has cut out in his pocket, and he shows it to me each day. Some days, are funnier than other, but he always makes faces at me as well if I am seeing to other customers. If I am alone, he'll come down and show me the cartoon. Then he loves to tell me to go back to sleep:lol:
Anyway, my day is filled with dullness at work, but watching people come by makes it much more fun than it should be. As for the regular people who just come down my row to say "Hi", they are what make a single shift tolerable. I'm glad that so many people can be kind to the poor girl in the row who looks to be guarding a pile of food. They are the real reason I still go to work each weekend, and they are what I will miss when I move on to working somewhere else.
