Jimi Hendrix ~ Deep Purple

Rate this Entry
Deep Purple was influenced a lot by Jimi Hendrix, especially in the 8-song album "Shades of Deep Purple," the 8th song of which is actually a cover of "Hey Joe" by Hendrix. The whole album shows influence, especially the 5th track, "Mandrake Root" which starts with the very same guitar riff as "Foxy Lady," but they vary it by making the first part of the song out of this riff, while Hendrix plays it, and then adds onto it to make it a more complicated riff. Other covers Deep Purple did I can think of now are "Prelude: I'm So Glad" (Cream) and "Help" (Beatles).

Deep Purple? Did you know that Deep Purple was also a song sung during WWII in the 40s? But it's probably different from Jimi Hendrix's.

Didn't know that, it might be the same Deep Purple. The band I am talking about did songs like "Smoke on the Water", and "Highway Star"...Lots of others, they're a good band.

Hey, how did I miss this entry?! I totally LOVE Deep Purple. And I also totally LOVE Jimi Hendrix. Glad you posted this here, Nik. May their music live on!

On another note (pardon the pun?) Ian Gillian, Deep Purple's lead singer, did a stellar job of his role of Christ in the Rock Opera version of Jesus Christ Superstar. He is/was fantastic, makes me wonder what he's up to nowadays...
