Back From Days Off

Well, if you haven't guessed from the title, I am back up in Northern Alaska. The days off were actually quite boring. Its very hard to believe how I thought there was so much to do in Wisconsin when I was growing up. Now, I feel that its too flat and maybe even dreary. The mountains will do that to you. I don't know, if I will ever be happy until I'm back in the mountains.

The return flight was exceptionally beautiful. The weather was great for my flight from Minneapolis to Anchorage yesterday. We flew over the Canadian Rockies, which sparkled like the jewels they are. I am a glacial person deep in my heart. I love the winter, the cold, the outdoors. I studied glaciation in college. It was my specialization, so I gaze out the window and look at the effects of the glaciers on the mountains. I even spied several dozen on this trip. It was heavenly.

The flight up to Deadhorse, Alaska was beautiful too. You depart Anchorage and fly out over these frozen tidal flats. The flats briefly depart your view while the plane turns around over the ocean and then you see them briefly. We passed Mt. McKinley (Denali) and the 20,320 ft (6,194 m) mountain looks like its reaching up for you. Then the clouds obscured everything until we reached the vast white northern plains escarpment where rivers are opaline color and imbricate across the plains reflecting the electric red ribbon of a setting sun.

In all my Air Force years I never met anyone stationed in Alaska that did not love it. Only part of Wisconsin I ever visited was Portage as I had a Shadow collector/minister friend there and my wife and I would visit on way back to Michigan and New York. You describe it with great beauty and love.
