I'm a Diced Tomato

National Young Leaders Conference

I've been nominated by who knows because of my "outstanding academic achievements" to go to Washington D.C. and meet important people and stuff. It actually sounds really ligitimate, but I dunno. It's apparently very elite and only 1% of students are nominated.

I really am nothing. Compared to a lot of people I know. Why would they want me?

I've been nominated for another thing. It was last year. But it was...stupid. My counselor said so...wasn't worth it. He has no idea about this one, though. He's never heard of it.

They gave me a list of alumni from my school and I know the two listed. I guess it's just another way of getting me to it along with the fancy paper and fake gold seal.

I'd rather slack off than work and be a leader. I don't mind doing nothing at all. The only reason why I'm kind of a perfectionist is because I want to grow up and get a very well-paid job so I can have lots of money and retire early and play all I want. My dad says that's cool, but if I work hard now, I will always work hard because that is what is expected. I don't wanna be a leader. That word scares me. I hate expectations. I hate being tested for excellence. I hate being noticed and examined carefully. I love being smart and informed, but I'm really way too addicted to fun. I don't like responsibility. I guess I need to learn to deal with it, with more school, a job, and learning to drive in my near future.

Here's their website: http://www.cylc.org/nylc/

What do you guys think? I know I can trust LitNet...I love all of you. Have any of you done this or do you have children, siblings, etc. that have done this? Is it valid? Worth it?

I don't know how legitimate the nylc is, but congratulations on the nomination all the same. You don't have to bee all fun or all work. Life is a balance, and you can have the best of both worlds.

What do you mean what do we think?!? Of course you should go! But this is only one of your friends speaking, really it's your choice- and you probably knew I would say this.... But I think it's a great opportunity. Go! And what do you mean you are nothing? You are very, very intelligent and you are a potential leader. Don't underestimate yourself!

Congrats on the nomination. It seems like I remember hearing about this when I was in high school, but beware if they are asking for money. Check the Better Business Bureau, they should have some useful information. If you want to have a really good paying job, you're going to have to learn to like being a leader. This doesn't mean you can't have fun, but if you excel at something, you are also going to be expected to have good leadership skills. Save fun for the weekends and off time. Besides, the more money you make, the more fun things you can pay to do;)

I agree about being wary if they ask for money. In that case, you need to decide if it is worth it to participate. Otherwise, I would just go and have a great time. At your age I was notorious for taking advantage of such trips by doing what mattered to me. I sometimes fulfilled obligations, but sometimes I would skip out and go do something more worthwhile than shaking hands, posing for photos, and eating roast beef. It just depends, and I do NOT want to be a bad influence, but there is just a lot of life to live out there and traveling is a good time to live it.

Well, Lily, since you asked, I'd say firstly that the advice of mkhockenberry and the others is good advice, and I can't add much to their answers. Secondly, I really think that it is an honour indeed, for you to have been nominated to begin with -- you sound like you are quite academic, and that will bring rewards later, when you are fighting to get accepted into your dreams of tomorrow -- a certain College or University. So keep your strong work ethic, it will certainly pay off. Having fun is good too, and I think that you have a balanced life, from what you say and stuff here at LitNet. Well good luck to you, Lily. A guidance counsellor at school and your parents will also be helpful in deciding what is what. Take care, Kizzo

Thanks for all the great advice, everyone. I really appreciate it. And my entry has become a featured entry! :0 Wow! I'm still considering it, and I have some plans to find out if the whole deal is worth it or not. Again, thanks.
