it was the most exquisite dinner
an excellent steak
medium rare with delicious mushrooms
and, of course,
a beautiful red wine

as we casually chatted about our day
he reached out to hold my hands
his were so very warm and inviting
we shared what was ahead
what we'd been doing
apart from each other

The evening air was captivating
harmonizing we considered
in the soft candle light
out on the terrace
enjoying the intimacy
the stars and moon
our friendly subtle companions

he casually moved closer
to tell a simple story
his voice lowered
i closed my eyes
to hear his contentment

how can this be
something so simple
so perfect
so unexpected
