of all the strangenesses.

Yesterday was weird. I had my first chemistry class at a local college last night. It went ok, and I think I'll do fine on it. Everything is reviewed some three times between teacher, book, and included cd-rom and there's the benefit of lab work at the school. So last night we did a lab on measuring mass, volume, and density of different substances and calculating our percent range and error ranges. We were given the choice of working alone or in groups. I wasn't quite sure that I had understood everything that we were supposed to do so I asked someone if she wanted to be a group. She agreed, and someone else joined in with us. We all began with measuring several items and recording the data on a piece of paper. Somehow the talk got around to ages and I was asked how old I am. When I told them I'm 16 they were shocked. One of them was 33 and the other girl didn't say her age.
I think they thought that I was a genius to be in college but of course, I told them it was through a program that allows highschoolers to start working through their general ed. Next question follows logically is "what school do you go to?" As you know I'm homeschooled.

One of them said "I bet you're glad to get into a school setting like this one."
"Not really. It's all the same." I said. School is school, after all, regardless of where it's done.

Then I had to go measure the mass of something in another room. When I got back their attitudes had a 180 degree turnaround! All of a sudden I was doing the measuring, the calculations, the formulas. They just sort of faded. I ended up telling them what I was doing and why I was doing it....though what I was doing was on the handout that they were holding. The talking died down to agreeing with whatever I said. They were still very nice. Maybe it was a sort of test or something. I didn't mind doing the work but I felt like a total jerk telling a 33-year-old woman what to do. Eh. It was strange.

More later. Just had to put this down somewhere.

EDIT: Quick note to say I'm going to be scarce round here again, at least for a month this time. I have to study for the PSAT test. See you on the weekends!

Don't worry Andy. The experience will be great for you. By the end of the year you will be as mature and smart as the oldest people there. Good for you. Maybe you are a genius.

This should be a character builder for you. Not sure if they were sluffing off their work on the 'kid' or not. But at least they stayed friendly it seems.

thats amazing to be doing something like that at your age. I dont think it was right that they left all the work for you to do in the end though. There aint nothing better than showing some nosy older person that you have more brains than them!

Yes indeed, I second Niamh's comment. Don't let them take advantage of you, though. And we are all very proud of you to be able to 'show the older kids how to play', lol! Take care!

Thanks everyone. Though I really wasn't doing anything particularly remarkable; everything I did was listed in thorough detail on the papers we had.
