I'm at the library and I've forbidden myself to check out any fiction because I'm in school AND I have about four others that I've started and need to finish. There are just so many lovely books to read! I'll never get enough! I'm reading Wilde for a book report, Yeats poetry, Tolkien, and I started "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" by Lawrence Sterne. Tristram Shandy....I think the author's a bit mad. But that's what makes the book interesting, I guess. It was written in the late 1700s. Then of course there's the collection of Emily Dickinson poetry that I started last year and never finished. Emily Dickinson's a bit hard to unravel, surprisingly. Some of the stuff she writes is so enmeshed in allegory and nature that I can't make head nor tails of it. Then there's Dante to get into, and that book of Byron, Keats, and Shelley. Lovely poetry but what a dissipated life Byron led! Genius or no, that was decadent. And of course, everyone on this site loves "Heart of Darkness" by Conrad so...that's on my list too. Don Quixote. Can't get enough of books, but this is the first year I've started so many at the same time. So I've started planning my course of reading. First Wilde, then Yeats, Tolkien, and then we'll see.
Does anyone here do fanfiction? I write fanfiction for the LOTR fandom off and on. I've been working on this story (purists will roll their eyes but I do so love Boromir) in which Boromir stays alive because the boat takes him back to Lothlorien and Galadriel and the elves heal him. I got an editor last year and she went through my story and suggested corrections for me. It's only recently I've started encorporating them and I can't wait to re-post my fixed chapters on the fanfiction website.
So I finally figured out why Boromir is one of my favorite characters in the Lord of the Rings. Principles. For him, right was right absolutely and wrong was wrong absolutely. But of course, humankind puts it's own spin on what is wrong and what is right, as Boromir did in using the ring. When he really understood what the Ring was capable of, after assaulting Frodo, he realized he was thoroughly in the wrong and did his best to remedy his fault. That's why I like Boromir. Strong, loyal, and principled. And now I'll shut up. (Countess, don't laugh. Orlando may be thoroughly cute and he may read but Boromir! Strong man of Gondor!and
