oh the lovelinesses!

I'm at the library and I've forbidden myself to check out any fiction because I'm in school AND I have about four others that I've started and need to finish. There are just so many lovely books to read! I'll never get enough! I'm reading Wilde for a book report, Yeats poetry, Tolkien, and I started "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" by Lawrence Sterne. Tristram Shandy....I think the author's a bit mad. But that's what makes the book interesting, I guess. It was written in the late 1700s. Then of course there's the collection of Emily Dickinson poetry that I started last year and never finished. Emily Dickinson's a bit hard to unravel, surprisingly. Some of the stuff she writes is so enmeshed in allegory and nature that I can't make head nor tails of it. Then there's Dante to get into, and that book of Byron, Keats, and Shelley. Lovely poetry but what a dissipated life Byron led! Genius or no, that was decadent. And of course, everyone on this site loves "Heart of Darkness" by Conrad so...that's on my list too. Don Quixote. Can't get enough of books, but this is the first year I've started so many at the same time. So I've started planning my course of reading. First Wilde, then Yeats, Tolkien, and then we'll see.

Does anyone here do fanfiction? I write fanfiction for the LOTR fandom off and on. I've been working on this story (purists will roll their eyes but I do so love Boromir) in which Boromir stays alive because the boat takes him back to Lothlorien and Galadriel and the elves heal him. I got an editor last year and she went through my story and suggested corrections for me. It's only recently I've started encorporating them and I can't wait to re-post my fixed chapters on the fanfiction website.

So I finally figured out why Boromir is one of my favorite characters in the Lord of the Rings. Principles. For him, right was right absolutely and wrong was wrong absolutely. But of course, humankind puts it's own spin on what is wrong and what is right, as Boromir did in using the ring. When he really understood what the Ring was capable of, after assaulting Frodo, he realized he was thoroughly in the wrong and did his best to remedy his fault. That's why I like Boromir. Strong, loyal, and principled. And now I'll shut up. (Countess, don't laugh. Orlando may be thoroughly cute and he may read but Boromir! Strong man of Gondor! and )

You've got quite a reading list Andy. As to Tristram Shandy, it's weird book. Some don't even consider it a novel. I remember that I was one of the few in my 18th century novels class to like it. In fact I loved it. Let me know what you think. It's different.

I've never heard of fanfiction. What's that? My favorite character LOTR character has always been Aragorn.

Thanks for commenting, Virgil! I'm going to have to roll up my sleeves for Shandy, but I'm looking forward to it. It's been referred to in so many of the novels I've read that when I found it at this gem of a used bookstore I had to get it. Fanfiction is fan-written fiction based on an already-written story. My chosen niche is Lord of the Rings, so I'm writing stories using the characters of LOTR. The only original thing is the plot or any new characters you write up. There's a link to my fanfiction page on my favorite sites block. You can read my stuff on there but for real quality fanfiction go to my favorite stories. Aragorn is another favorite of mine. There is so much to admire in him. My favorites are Aragorn, Boromir and Faramir, and Galadriel.

Oh thanks for defining fan fiction for me. That is a cool thing to do. I'm sure it will really help you learn to write.

I've been secretly in love with each male character in LOTR at least a little at one point or another- except of course Gollum. Boromir and Faramir were both wonderful!

Boromir or Bromomir? Either way, I admired him too - a redeemed tragic hero - a new archetype perhaps? I like characters who demonstrate the depth for the potential for good and evil in themselves, but who, in the end, are redeemed/saved in some form or fashion. Sad he had to die for such an effect.
