What is the point

Rate this Entry
What is the point in going to college? I can say that after almost 4 years of classes and cramming information into my brain for all sorts of different texts I don't feel a bit more intelligent. In fact, all I feel is irritated that I've been spending huge amounts of money to be taught the same basic principles time and time again. Plus half of the information I've learned has been forgotten to make room for more information that I don't really need to know except to pass a test. So what is the real point of going to college for four years, when I could have learned all of the pertinent information in less than a year:flare: :flare: :flare:

I think the whole point is to prove that you have the ability to learn, but that isn't too difficult. There is no need for me to study the same marketing and business concepts every term for two years just to prove that, hey... I really can learn this material and apply it. Most of it isn't even applicable to the real world in the first place. My future employer isn't likely to care that I can name and define different marketing strategies. All they are going to want to know is that I am aware that they are options and that I know how to develop a marketing plan for higher level management. If they wanted to be assured that I have a brain in my head, look at high school, or have a single year of job applicable schooling. There is no need to spend almost $30,000 on school just so I have a piece of paper that says I can learn from a book. After all my time spent getting a degree, I'm here at the end worrying over what my responsibilities will be for a company. When I ask the school, or any of my teachers, all I get is a big question mark. If they are trying to teach me something shouldn't they know what I will be doing with the information? What I'm left with is an expensive piece of paper that I have no idea what to do with, but I'm stuck paying on it for at least the next ten years of my life (if not even longer). Maybe I should stick it to my forehead when I walk around so everyone can say "Hey look, she has a degree". Maybe then someone can tell me just what the stupid thing is worth instead of shrugging their shoulders and giving me a blank look.

College is a good investment. It can be frustrating but after working with people who haven't been, I am grateful that I had the opportunity to go (well actually, I've always been college bound).

Education enriches your life. It is expensive and they keep raising the tuition year after year and the textbooks are ridiculously expensive, but after all that, I still think it's worth it.

And, I prefer traditional class instead of online class. That's just my two cents after not sleeping at all.

Hock, you need the degree in order to get a good job. Plus you need a break in order to realize how much you've learned. Once you spend a year without going to school and let your brain "catch its breath" you'll see. Plus, you don't realize how grown you've become from the experience. If you have any friends you know from before college and they didn't go to college, just hang out with them for a little bit and you'll see the difference.

I think that what Virgil has said echoes my own thoughts, Hock. At least you had the intelligence and ability to go to college, as frustrated as you are. Not everyone who desires to go is granted this.... Hang in there my friend Kizzo

It pains me to admit this but after basically ignoring college for all my life itwould have been useful in getting a better sort of job. On the other hand I like what I'm doing (most of the time). That little piece of paper is a door opener though. It says something to prospective employers that you have proven an ability to take on a program and see it rhough so you might stick it out with them. People that know me 'think' I've been however. I find that amusing but I've always had a different slant on what's important to me.

College is a way to make you spend your money, betcha that if education was free college wouldn't last more than too years....

If college was free I would be happy to go for the rest of my life. I love learning, I just hate the cost of studying something that really isn't a personal passion. For me, business is a way to secure the future of my family and children, but I would much rather be a research scientist or even some high school student's dreaded biology teacher (you know the one I'm talking about... the one who just loves the subject and doesn't get how all of you can't:D). Science is much more of an interest to me and I know what I would be doing with the degree.
