Memories of the 28th Century

St. Valentine’s Day

I am opposed to holidays of all sorts, and that includes Saint Valentine’s Day, especially as it is commonly celebrated with the notes and comments of love, etc. I never before bothered looking into what he is alleged to have done, but it appears that he was being tried for trying to spread Christianity, and the judge challenged him to restore the sight of his daughter, which he did. So why is Valentine associated with sexual attraction? It would make more sense if Valentine were in charge of improving vision.

I had thought that Valentine was cooked to death, but the Catholics claim that he was beaten and beheaded. I’ll have to change that in my mind.

The Catholic Encyclopedia has this as description of what Valentine is:
"St. Valentine is the Patron Saint of affianced couples, bee keepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travellers, and young people. He is represented in pictures with birds and roses and his feast day is celebrated on February 14."

If they want to assert that Valentine was beheaded on February 14, that's their business, but what about candies and other things that express words of love? I don't think that we should include anything sugary whether taste wise or figuratively. And everyday should be dedicated to lovers. But why bee-keepers, epilepsy, and the plague? It might be that these and the others are just applications of his position as saint of greetings. This day is unnecessary, because Friday is the day of the Goddess Frigga, the Goddess of frigging, and that should be good enough for everyone.

The general idea is fine, but one day a year is no where frequent enough, but another day in addition to Fridays might be excessive, so let's just drop the 14th of February. Maybe another day of the week can be designated for some purpose. Among the Norse, Odin, as Wodin, has that day special to him, but how would we celebrate it?

That's why I favor not having any special days, just one day after the last one, and so on forever. If you need an excuse to eat chocolate, then you should change that attitude and start eating chocolate every day. And if we need a particular time to celebrate love, then maybe we can assign every hour of every day for that purpose.

The day certainly is within the feast of Lupercalia, but identifying someone like Valentine with Lupercalia is odd.

St. Valentine married Roman soldiers at a time the emperor forbade it, believing a soldier with a family would have divided loyalties. He representative of the Christian ideal of courage and advocate for marriage and family. This is the primary reason he is given a Holy Day.

Holy Days and secular holidays serve as reminders that we may otherwise overlook in the business of our daily lives. They bring us closer as a community by observing our cultural values together. In a time of rampant excessive individualism many forget no man is an island. Man is a social being and needs to share a common history and culture with his community to feel rooted and grounded.
