Out of Action (Updated)

Well. I'm kind of out of action for a week. Really wish I'd put my sunglasses on for this so I'll be super brief. I was about a month overdue for an eye test so went in yesterday. To be honest I haven't noticed much of a difference so I hoped I wouldn't need new lenses like last year. Well, I was lacking a little clarity from about 3 or so meters. I measured the distance properly at the time but I can't really be bothered now. It was a box of dog biscuits on the radiator and from my desk I could see the writing but had to strain to read it properly even though it wasn't blurry, kind of just funny around the edges. The optician said that my eyes were fine besides that and that if I could live with it then it wasn't worth getting new lenses.

I think they told me what it was but I forgot. So. This year. Finally went and here's the results. My short-sightedness is about the same but now I have astigmatism so I need new even thicker lenses. The optician tried to explain it but she didn't make much sense. I looked it up when I got home and I thing I've got it.
Astigmatism is kind of like the film dam busters. You know the one with the lights on the planes where they meet up then they drop the bouncing bombs. You're eyes have to work like that really and astigmatism would be like one or both of the lights being a little askew and not meeting up in the middle properly. I'm not going on about it anymore so if I'm not making sense sorry you'll just have to look it up.

Luckily I found my spare glasses before we went. I need 2 new lenses and they're £150 each and I have to pay for my eye test too so I can't really be adding the cost of new frames into the mix at the moment. Besides. Picking out new frames is like picking out a new face. I really wasn't in the mood for that. so my good old frames are going to be refitted.

My spare pair are old, thin, breaking and about 4 prescriptions old now not accounting for my astigmatism. Needless to say things requiring focus are problematic. I'm terrified that straining my eyes will make it worse before I get my glasses back in about a week. I'm alternating between these old ones and my sun glasses which are about 2 prescriptions old so it's nearer to my current requirements. I don't change my sunglasses much because I barely wear them.

I didn't really need to write this up. I haven't blogged for a month or so. I planned to write up my Halloween but never got round to it. The new layout kind of put me off. This is the first fresh entry since the change. Never mind.

-UPDATE-

Well I have to say I have a super optician. We got a call today that said my glasses are ready. He said it would take 10 days but he'd ask them to put a rush on it. I figured that'd be a week then, that's about standard. But it was done in 3 days. Like I said super optician.
One lens is a bit thicker than the other but I really don't mind. It's so lovely to be able to read properly again. My eyes are still a little tired but that's because I didn't sleep in as long as I needed. I'm so happy. I think they've fiddled with the bridge a bit but I might just be imagining it.

I wonder if I've got astigmatism? My eye doctor checks my eyes, takes forever to find the correct vision in each eye, it all looks fine in the doctor's office, and when I get the new glasses it seems I can't see as well as in the doctor's office with that machine with all the lenses over my face. When I get a physical exam at the regular doctor's office, they make me do a quick vision test with my glasses and I can't read the chart from the half way down. They always tell me I have to get an eye exam, and I tell them I have. Even at work I have to sit toward the front to see what's being shown off the projector. Everybody thinks I'm blind. What the heck is going on? And I always make sure I get an annual eye exam.

Take care Blue. Have you stopped your "Bluebird Out" sign off? That was so you.

You could always ask them to check you for astigmatism if you're worried. Have you ever mentioned this to your optician? Maybe they could fix it. The type of lenses you get can have an effect. This time, and I vaguely remember it happening last year too, some of the lenses she tried on me looked misty. She assured me that they were all clean so it must be the glare of the screen. I always try to give information as precisely as I can during an eye exam and things have always been so much clearer when I get the new glasses. Hope it improves for you.
By the way I didn't do my usual sign off because I was trying to keep it short. Focussing on words is one of the most tiring things for my eyes at the moment. I'm wearing my sunglasses now, at 3:40am, so that helps to reduce the glare at least. It's not that I can't see. It's just that I can't focus properly.

No I have never mentioned it but I will next time. I would think he would check for it. They put me through all sorts of tests. I can't stand that glaucoma test.

3:40 AM and you're wearing sunglasses! You must be a blues player. Like this:

Hope the new lenses work well for you, Bluebiird.

Virgil, maybe you're getting older and you need bifocals. Sometimes when you're older it's harder to read with your regular lenses.

I have progressive lens qimi. I have no problem reading up close. Actually I see better up close without my glasses than with. It's with distance I have trouble.

Which one? There are several? I've looked it up. If you're refering to the use of rebound tonometers (which is what my optician seems to use (I google imaged it to be sure )) then I completely agree. I hate it. I usually say ow as a reflex which puzzles them because they think I'm in pain. This time round she did it three times in each eye . As for the other glaucoma tests I have no prior experience, though they all sound uncomfortable

    Thank you. They do.
