Getting My Greek On

Rate this Entry
I have found myself entering into a phase in which I am submerging myself in Aniecent Greek literature, and mythology, which has always reamined a long time interest of mine, though I did not really plan things out this way, it is just sort of the way they came about.

First of all I had not that long ago read the Iliad and a long time ago I saw this special program that was on the history channel, cannot recall what it was called, but it explored various different ancient myths, uncovering their roots in truth and reality and finding the real life people and events which inspired these myths. Needless to say one of them they did was The Odyssey which got me all in the mood to reread it, but well at first I no longer possessed a copy of the book. So it took me a while before I happened upon another copy. Than with everything else I am reading I just had not had the opportunity to revisit it. But in reading the Iliad, and having recently watched the move Wrath of the Titans it once again hyped me up again so at last I am revisiting that old favorite of mine.

But in addition to that, as part of a group I belong to I am also reading Trojan Women by Euripides. and when I finished Trojan Women, if I can fit it in, I also want to read Hecuba.

As well I am also currently reading a work of Historical Fiction which is based upon the Oedipus myth.

Sounds great. And I don't think that you could read a better poet than Euripides. I'll be interested to hear what you think of them. Greek literature is among my personal favorites and the tragedies in particular are some that I go back to year after year.

So far I am really enjoying Trojan Women, and after having read the Iliad it is interesting having the womens point of view told.

I do love the the poetic way he has of writing, and Hecuba is alleged to be better written than Trojan Women.

Nice. I, myself, love ancient Greek literature. Always have and always will. It's very intriguing and interesting. I love the tales of myths, gods, and legends.

Nice on DM, I'm also a fan and read Greek poetry from time to time, having read both the Iliad and Odyssey.I'm also curious to know what your opinion is once you are done. I'd be interested in trying it.
