Halls of the Dark Muse

Lions, Tigers, and Turkeys? (Oh My)

Rate this Entry
We have a lot of wild Turkeys around the area where I live, and I was out on my walk with my ipod on, rocking out to my music and getting lost in my own thoughts oblivious to the world. My walks are my time to escape the world, with no other distractions, and no one else around, and not having anything else I have to do, I like to escape the world and within my mind conjure up all kinds of chaos and mayhem, while something like NIN or Godsmack or Tool is blasting away, so I can play out my fantasies of being a Dark Overlord.

But back to reality, I am walking along in this field on the slope of a hill and down below is the creek, and there are lots of tall weeds, trees and such around, when all of the sudden I hear the sound of something large rustle in the brush right next to where I was walking, and I jump out of my skin, and at first my mind thinks dog (not that I am afraid of dogs but I prefer not to be surprised by one charging at me). And so I spin around look over, to find that it was a turkey that I had startled.

Startled the thoughts out of your mind, huh?

    Haha, that's funny.

You may be surprised by this, but we have wild turkeys on Staten Island. Here check this youtube clip:

You wouldn't think New York City has wild life.

Haha that is surprising, though understandably those Turkey's are much more accustomed to people, the ones around here tend to be pretty skittish and you cannot really get near them. I wanted to take pictures a few times but they usually take off as soon as they see you. It is kind of like when my sister who lives in Altadena (which is in the L.A. area tells me about seeing wildlife, I am always a little skeptical. LOL one time when I was visiting she told me she was going to take my hiking and I did not believe it at first, but they actually do have some mountains close by.

So funny! Love the video. Makes me miss the area, particularly hearing the accent.

An odd question if you don't mind. Are wild turkeys cuter than farmed turkeys? Because wild turkeys sounds kind of cute.

They look close to the same, but tend to be leaner looking than farmed turkey's

I love catching glimpses of the wild, which happens about once every ten years for me.

But the mention of wild turkeys always make me think of that old WKRP in Cincinatti episode which you can find on youtube. Here is a brief clip here:

THAT IS SO GREAT! I love that show! What a sensational clip! Thanks Qimi!

We have a bunch that run around the area in the fall. Maybe we are part of their yearly life cycle feeding grounds. But I really don't know that much about turkey, nor does the average person according to WKRP and all the Americans that peruse the bowls of this part of LITNET.
