The title refers to the first novel in a series byJanet Evanovich detailing the sometimes funny, chaotic life of one Stephanie Plum--Bounty Hunter. There are currently 18 books in the series--very fast reads and for the most part fluff with a sweet taste. Truth to tell Stephanie makes Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone a stuffy old maid in comparison.
I quit around book 12 mostly to catch my breath. I will be the first to admit being a fan of series. I'm also at the age where I can often detect padding or when a character is running place. Rumpole of the Bailey suffered from this in his last five novels. The test is when you can a series in any order and not be confused by the events. Most of the latter Tarzan books from about 14 up fit this description quite well.
Anyhoooooo a movie adaptation came out Friday and dear friend Brandy wanted to kjnow if I wanted to go see it with her.
Logos reaches for a sharp quill. He's mine--how dare she??
Mtpspur returns from fantasyland and resumes his entry. Reminds himself he is married--secretly thinks about three ladies that he KNOWS loves him anyway at least once upon a time and moves on.
After much thought I concluded the LAST time I had been anywhere to a movie that wasn't wife, son or daughter was in 2002 with The Bourne Identity--a Christian fellow named Mark who broke an outing to see the first X-Men movie and never called or returned calls ever again. I still am not sure why. I have been stand offish and on guard ever since. I could say a liot more on the subject. It would be of no edification to any. It is what it is.
Since it was Brandy however there was no hesitation. I agreed. The debut was on one of our day's off from the salt mines and it was simply a manner of no comics that week--movie prices being what they were.
The theater selected was a 20 minute drive for me down in a shopping development called the Greene which is laid out like a small outdoor mall/village style. It's only a few years old but I have heard horror stories about the costs and everything I need for my shopping needs is five minutes from home so I never had an incentive to go there. The showing is for 3:15 pm.
Now at AAA the member states what store they are parked byand the trucks show up and there is rarely any trouble finding anyone. I had once pulled into the huge parking lot to check directions off the main street and was on my way in about a minute so I was not observing anything at the time.
I THOUGHT the Greene was in the shape of a huge square and would have bet Ruth's next car payment on it.
Nope.
I'm in the huge lot I had made a beeline for and there is not hide nor hair of Bugs Bunny anywhere. The Greene is laid out in the huge square with about three rows of streets running through it. I call Branyy who is pulling up to the theater with not a clue where I am.
I'm start to enter a store to practice my befuddled lost routine that usually works wonders but back out. Ican do better then that. I notice a block column map the Greene on the corner and I am only one street bloack away.
Brandy is in the theater waiting for me. This theatre makes the one I attend in Beavercreek look cheesy. I discover my military discount is less then a senior citizen discount and the clerk never blinks at my admission of being 60. I ask him to inform the young lady with me that she has no future with me. He solemnly informs Brandy and we all laugh.
We share a quick lunch and sit in the middle seatign area and the next hour and half goes pleasently enough. While it's never going to be a classic it was amusing and cute. A nice B picture if you don't think about it very hard. Chinatown it is NOT--my favorite detective movie because it makes you work for it.
Brandy and I discuss quickly what we liked and what was different from the book-minor stuff. I only Debbie Reynolds form the movie somewhat amazed she's still alive now that Elizabeth Taylor finally went the way of all flesh not sure who is left of the 'Hollywood' ladies.
The actress playing Plum was cute and the lack of Jersey accent didn't bother me like it did a reviewer fr a Toronto newspaper--the only one I could find online at Rotten Tomatos website prior to going. The Dayton Daily had no review--a bad sign. I doubt it will make much money but I have wasted hours doing worse things. At least it wasn't the travesty Jonah Hex was.
