Great Expectations

Rate this Entry
Having finished off the Sherlock Holmes stories and being too lazy to look up my Keith Laumer books in the Retief series I decided it was time to read a REAL book albeit I had already done this in junior high.

Great Expecations by Dickens was chosen over David Copperfield and a one page attempt at Waverly by Sir Walter Scoot and a bit of skimming of Ivanhoe to see if the idiot realized REBECCA is the lady he SHOULD have married--nope no change.

While remembering the overall plot fairly well I had forgotten entire characters and am starting to suspect a revised edition from the school days.

Am two thirds along. I was reading a chapter a day online here until by day 9 I just HAD to read ahead.

Asa kid I sypathized with Pip. As an adult I want to slap him silly. Poor Magwich his good will towards Pip so sorely wasted by a yooung man who means well but rarely does well. I recall Estella being an Ice Godess and having known and bene scarred by a couple I am surprised by how sorry I feel about HER. She KNOWS she shoud not be this way--since she treats Pip differently from the others--he's too stupid to see thgta even when she tells him to his face when he tries to convince her Dru mmie is poison for her. Iam strating to think Dickens doe snot LIKE ladies to be happy in bhis books. Nancy from Oliver Twist comes to mind.

So enjoying this immensely.

Hope that you enjoy it my friend. This is one of those books I have meant to pick up and read again as an adult just to see if I view it differently now. It will have to wait since I'm working through Dorian Gray at the moment. An entertaining read.

Oh I definitely have a whole duifferent viewpoint of it. Miss Havuisham is crazy, Pip is vain and weak BUT has good intentions, Magwich is the one I puity most--got a raw deal all around and Estella would have chewed me up for lunch and spit me out ages ago and laughed at the scars. Yes--I really AM enjoying this book.

See, now I'm going to have to add it to my list. Now if I could just quit watching Supernatural and bad monster movies. I would have more time to read. Honestly, I think I'm just too stressed for it, and TV takes less work.

Yes, that's the attitude Dickens wants us to take. With the exception of Pip as a child. As a child, Pip has to be endearing. I love that novel. David Copperfield has its good moments too. It's not as tight a story as GE, but their are some really funny characters.

Oh do read it LL. It's a classic and one of the best 19th century English novels written. I'm surprised you didn't have to read it in school. I bet your children will be reading it one day.

I did read it in school, and I'm afraid it made me never want to read Dickens again It wasn't the book that bothered me, more the way they taught the book. I do think it will be added to my list of things to read again. I've found I like many of them now, but it was torture when I was a teen

I am proud of you, Rich. Not because I don't think you can read, but because, like you, I have only recently taken it upon myself to branch out from my usual comfort zone, and it has been rewarding.

I, however, have not taken read any Dickens since I read a"A Tale of Two Cities" in high school. Loved it! He has not made it onto my list of things I'd like to read soon.

You picked a great year to read, him, too, as I believe this year is his 200th birthday.

    Happy reading, my friend.
