The Six Wishes of Artemis

Rate this Entry
This story was alluded to in the series of Camelot and I have always been partial to Artemis, I consider myself to be a daughter of Artemis as she is very reflective of certain aspects of myself. She was like one of the first tom boys.

On her 3rd Birthday Zeus asked her what she wanted and she told him she wanted six wishes, when he asked her what those wishes were, this was her reply:

1. To be allowed to live without having to be distracted by love and marriage.

2. A bow and arrow just like her brother's.

3. A hunting costume and freedom from having to dress up like a lady.

4. The job of bringing light into the world.

5. Sixty young nymphs to be her companions and to help care for her hunting dogs.

6. All the mountains on the earth to live on.

There is so much feminism apparent in the depiction of Artemis' daughter. Equality of the sexes is a concept as ancient as civilisation itself. She is willing to go beyond the powers of ordinary human beings and her determination to illuminate and enlighten the world shows her commitment. On top of all tat is her concern for the environment.
I wouldn't call it being tomboyish at all.

You say that as if being tom boyish is a bad thing. She desired to dawn men's clothing, forsake romance and lust, and run wild through the woods hunting. Yes there is feminism in Artemis but she is also like the patron goddess for tom boys everywhere. She offers sanctuary for women who choose to live outside the bounds of what is stereotypically views as feminine.

One has really to get out of frames in order to fully appreciate the new. The post was really good and though it may be a legend, its contemporarity is to be valued.

I was always a tomboy as a child-and I still prefer jeans or pants or shorts to skirts and dresses. I have never worn high heels.

I would rather not eschew romance, but I embrace her credo wholeheartedly!

In the modern world it is a lot easier for women to find the balance between romance and independence, but in the time of Artemis generally speaking a woman would have to make the choice between her freedom and relationships.
