The Worse Song of the 90's

Rate this Entry
Ok, this is cultural inanity. If it wasn’t so pathetically stupid, it would be funny. Rolling Stone Magazine voted on the worse songs of the 90′s (http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/rs_...gs-of-the-90s/) and I have to say I can’t disagree with the top, uhm, I’m mean bottom. “Barbie Girl” by Aqua (who is that?) had the dishonor of being the worse. I had never heard of it before. If your stomach allows, have a little whirl with it. It’s bad. It’s really bad.

I don’t know on how many levels that song sucks and the cultural message (and the video is no winner either, though as a spoof it’s kind of funny), but it really sucks.

Yes, I remember "Barbie Girl" it was a big radio hit when I was a kid. lol It's actually pretty typical late 90s eurodance, nothing too special about it.

The 90s wasn't exactly a high point for a lot of music lol.

Virgil, you're so innocent Obviously you've never been inducted into Euro pop, but to be fair Barbie Girl (and it's follow ups: Dr. Jones, Cartoon Heroes, they're the only ones I remember) were definitely, deliberately, ironically bad. A musical joke, European style

Yes, those are indeed very bad songs. Though Vanilla Ice, and I'm Too Sexy were hysterical. The others I found simply grating on my nerves.

I love Aqua (they're supposed to be terrible, they try to be terrible, ). We like to lip-sync to Aqua and Bollywood dance.

Oh dear, I loved Aqua when I was little. And TheFifthElement's right, they were being silly on purpose. Funnily enough, I couldn't imagine anyone taking them seriously.

My stummick could only make it past the first few seconds and the only positive aspect I found on the video was the little birds at the beginning My stummick was never able to digest these electronic noises. I can't call anything music if it's not serious. However, I remember this particular noise is still very popular down here... people don't need much for entertainment.

Virgil, how's the baby by the way?

It is totally awful and horribly catchy. I'll admit I remember the song and sang it with my friends.

I'm recalling a classmate by the nickname Barbie who seems quite shallow, like all those folks in electronic noise videos. If you just read what she posts on Facebook Apparently our nickname is related to our destiny

WTF??!!!!!!!!! What's Celin doin' up there/??? Have they seriously lost their minds???

Funny you say that farnoosh. . . . because I wondered why that Celine song wasn't the #1 worst song of the 1990s. I mean the Barbie song is, as others have noted, a bit of a parody, so it's badness has some artistic intent in that direction. But Celine is pure industrial cheese.

You guys actually have heard of that song? Some of you actually like it???

Yes, I realize it's somewhat in jest, but if you listen to the song without the video, the humor is not prominent. I think they were trying to make an aesthetic statement, one that went horribly wrong. The Rolling Stone article didn't proclaim it a parody. They assessed it as a legitimate song. I think the video leads you to call it a parody, but lots of videos and the songs have a disconnect. Anyway, who cares. It's trash.

I don't think I've ever heard of "Eruopop." I bet Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, Verdi, and Beethoven are rolling in their graves. That's the Eruopop I know. The only group I can think of that could fit that name is Abba, and this song does have an Abba feel to it. I graduated college in 1985 and got married in 1991. I think I stopped following pop music around 1991. I can't for the life of me think of a 90s song, though I'm sure I know some.

Matthew is doing great. He had his second birthday last week, and I've been too busy with work and the flooded basement to write up another Matthew blog. Plus for some strange reason, my camera won't download the pictures to the computer. I reinstalled the software and still it doesn't download. If anyone can help me with that, it would be much appreciated.

Maybe you can try taking out the camera's memory card, and placing it in your computer's memory card reader... supposing your computer has one. If it is the case, the memory card should be seen like one more disk in the system and you should be able to see the picture files on it, and therefore to copy them to other folders. I hope it works.

No really, Aqua are just having fun. Nothing serious. It's not uncommon in the 'Eurozone' for bands to pop up that are just silly. Aqua was one of them, but my favourite was always Army of Lovers for pure camp, silly silliness Right Said Fred were pretty silly too, on the whole.

My 'worst' songs of the 90s would have to be either Vengaboys 'We Like to Party' which I thoroughly hate, or the hideous Mr. Blobby. Ugh Maybe they passed Rolling Stone by.

@Max - I don't have a card reader in my computer. I may have to buy one. I hear they are less than $20.

@Fifth - I just don't get what you're calling "Eurozone." If you take the video away from that Army of Lovers song, the humor is lost. What remains is like the Aqua song, bad music. The video and the music have to be linked. By the way I loved the luscious breasts in that video. The other songs were really trash.

Good God! They were horrible. I've come to the conclusion that most of these songs were written as an excuse to put out a video. The video has more merit than the song. In all fairness we had disco when I was of age that listened to this. It was either loved by some and despised by others. I was most definitely in the despise camp.
