Breaking News! (There is nothing of any importance in this Blog post)

I really hate "breaking news" Because it interrupts what you are watching and than most of the time you have to listen to some announcer guy just babbling for like an hour. If something noteworthy does happen it is fine to pop in and be like hey this just happened, but than they can just go back to what was originally on and talk about whatever it was later when they acutally have more information about it.

I was watching TV when the new broke in to announce some fire somewhere and that is really all they had to say about that, after announcing the fire they could have gone away but instead they take up the rest of the time that the show was on just to listen to the new anchor make himself sound like an idiot spouting a bunch of rambling nonsense just to fill up the air time.

I mean this is seriously what is sounded like:

"Look at that, there is really a lot of smoke in the air right now. Can you see all of that smoke. There is just so much smoke it is really amazing, that is a big fire. Hey lets talk to this lady who lives and the area and see what she can see." Than she explains what she is seeing from her house and he asks her a couple of questions and than is like "Wow that is incredible, that is exactly what we are seeing right now. Oh my goodness look at that, you can see the flames in the air and the smoke now. There are flames and smoke. It is like a tornado of smoke in the air right now."

The whole thing was just filming the fire and than a guy just basically dictating to you what you can see with your own eyes. They were not providing any useful informaiton.

I agree that this sort of thing is the most annoying disruption.
For this very reason, I don't have a TV. We just listen to the radio. I don't even miss it one bit. I still know what is going on in the world, since NPR is blaring all day.

You nailed that one, Dark Muse. It is so annoying.

Yes, SO ANNOYING. Thank you for making a post about this. I want to run my own media organization so that the American people can actually know what's going on in the country and world instead of watch mindless "BREAKING NEWS" stories for the rest of eternity.

    Good luck with that!

For the rest of eternity, indeed, paper, lol. There are some good places to get new. My son recommends Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera is a very good source of news.

My mother watches Al Jazeera, but I think the English language broadcast is very different from what they get in the Mid-East.

I love not having television. That drives me nuts. Almost as nuts as when the Olympics throw off my Simpsons watching schedule.

I've noticed it's even worse in OZ - there are 5 free-to-air channels and one community station, the five cover the same nonsense as you've described, while the community station plays old Bob Hope/western/rom com movies or the Lawnmowermen's Association Half Hour (rpt, PG, BW, boring...)

Have you a DVD player? They're a boon to sanity when TV's the only thing you feel like doing, I find. I have a collection of some of the worst movies ever made that are so bad they're not even listed on TWMEM lists, which I'm slowly getting through in moments like: 'An Important Announcement from The Prime Minister...'
