When Something So Cool Has to Go Wrong

Rate this Entry
I get really annoyed when something I really like ends up doing something that pisses me off! Because than I have to have the debate with myself if I need to give it up no matter how cool it is, or continue to pursue it even if doing to than becomes at odds with my convictions and beliefs.

Earlier I posted about how I found this really cool thing called the LXD (League of Extraordinary Dancers) which is this really unique series done in comic book style and in which super powers are expressed through dance.

So I was really into it, and the second season was getting really good, when the last episode I just watched had this message in it stating something to the effect of.

"Because of the personal convictions of the LXD we want to stress the fact that we do not endorse the practice of the occult"

Which just irritated the heck out of me at first I was like no way, did I just read that, is that what they seriously said?

At that point I was half tempted to just stop watching than and there but my curiosity had got the best of me, as I was curious just what the episode detailed in which they felt the need to give such a disclaimer, expecting some sort of typical vilification of the occult involving a "Satanic" ritual you know with virgins and babies being sacrificed and orgies.

But it was not that bad, it was just this whole demonic possession type thing, which actually would have been really cool if they did not feel the need to taint it by insinuating that all of the occult is some evil, ominous, vile thing which you should stay away from.

I decided to see if there was anyone else who commented upon the disclaimer or took offence at the whole thing, and I did find one discussion about it, in which someone said that the episode was inspired by Michael Jackson's Thriller, and apparently in Thriller, MJ used that disclaimer so the LXD included it as homage to him and Thriller.

Which perhaps is a little better as the show itself is not in fact making a personal statement in regards to the occult but it still annoys me the way in which they are helping to continue to propagate such archaic and misleading ideas about the occult and what the occult really is.

If they had any way in which I could contact them, I would have sent them an e-mail telling them just what I thought about it, and offering them a bit of enlightenment on the true nature of the occult.

So now I do not know if I want to continue to watch or not. At first I was ready to just be done with them, but considering that the disclaimer was part of their artistic expression and could be seen as part of the series itself and not a reflection of their actual thoughts, I may be willing to stick with it. But now my excitement about the LSD may remain checked just a bit by my being irked by this whole thing.

Keep watching and put it out of your mind. Many art-forms dictate that you need to. Annoying minor Shakespearian characters; knowing that the new book by a favorite author probably won't have the same effect; movies with Adam Sandler in them (including the adds!); the hundredth time the coyote has sent for the Acme remote controlled rocket-propelled whatsit and keeps running after he's left the cliff and nosedives into the canyon...

(Incidentally, the last line you've typed LSD instead of LXD )

I am just going to tell myself that they did it purely for artistic reasons thus the message itself was a part of the series rendering it purely fictitious and not a reflection of what those he made the series really think.

I agree with MM and you could look at it as a minor offense and keep enjoying. I hear you though; it is incredibly irritating when a series you are hooked on starts to go south.
