Strange Noises in the Night

Rate this Entry
Today is Twilight Zone Day, and needless to say I am a huge fan of the show and loved watching it as a kid and a couple Halloween's back there was a marathon of Twilight Zone and I stayed up as late as I was possibly able to watch one episode after the other and it was pretty awsome.

So in honor of the occasion I have had a little mystery of my own which has now been solved. It all started a few days back when I kept hearing this sound which almost sounded like something say "Help" over and over but you could tell it did not really sound like a human voice, and clearly sounded like some sort of animal.

Than a couple nights ago I began to hear these strange sounds, it is hard to explain but it sounded like that noise like toy guns sometimes make. It is that sort of pew pew pew pew sound. And when I was a kid I use to have this little noise maker that made an assortment of different wacky and sort of sci-fi sounds. So at first I thought it was just someone playing a game or with some two or something. Than starting around midnight I began to hear what sounded like the chirping of songbirds, which really baffled becasue as far as I know there are not any song birds active at night.

All of these sounds seemed to be resonating from around the same area so at first I thought that perhaps maybe someone had recently got a parrot and maybe it was just imitating the sound of birds it hears throughout the day.

Well come the next night in the wee early hours of the morning before the break of dawn as I was going to bed I started to hear the sound of songbirds again, but this time it seemed like it was coming from a different direction than before, so I did not think it could be someones parrot.

I decided to look it up and see if in fact there were in types of nocturnal song birds, and I did find this one site in which people said that in urban areas where there are a lot of street lights it acutally confuses some birds and makes them sing at night, but I live in the suburbs and there really aren't a lot of street lights along the residential streets out here plus this is the first time I have ever before had this happen so I did not think that was the answer in my case.

I also came upon some Youtube videos in which other people were having the same problem. Birds chirping and singing from around midnight into the wee hours of the morning, and listening it sounded a lot like what I have heard and one one of the videos someone mentioned that they thought it was a mockingbird.

And Mockingbirds in addition to imitating the song of other birds also can imitate a variety of other noises and sounds. But I was not sure if we had those in the area where I live, so I looked it up and apparently they have only recently started to become common out here becasue they are starting to expand thier population.

So I think I have found my culprit.

That's really weird. You often seem to have to solve animal mysteries. Even though I know you live in the suburbs, you would think you live in some rural area from all the action you get.

Well we do have a mountain not that far off from where I live, and so this whole area is tucked right into the foot hills so we do get a lot of wildlife coming down from the mountain and the hills.

That makes more sense to me.
