the ball’s in our court now

Rate this Entry
What do I do? I should’ve taken her out by now but I’ll do this first, she won’t mind.
It seems that the dog I mentioned earlier, Saskia (3 year old Siberian husky) won’t be going home after all. Well this is…. As mum said, “the ball’s in our court now” so, it’s up to us I guess what happens to her. Do we keep her ourselves or get her re-homed? We can’t keep a dog long term can we? I’ve never wanted a dog. I’ve actually had my sights set on a hamster lately (I had 3 consecutively when I was a child) but a dog. Never wanted one. A puppy maybe but puppies grow up so that flicker of wanting vanishes pretty sharply. Maybe if I make that list of pros and cons I’ve been thinking of. I’ve told the dog this list several times.

Reasons for why I don’t want a dog (particularly this one)
- You have to take them out
- They get sick and you have to take them to the vet
- They pick things up in the street (like chicken bones) and eat them (and get sick)
- They get in fights with other dogs
- She was frightened by 2 Alsatians a few weeks ago and slipped her collar, they chased her out of the park (now she has a harness instead) but she could’ve been hit by a car (she ran across a road)
- She pulls when you take her out
- She mustn’t see or get wind of a cat or she’ll go berserk
- Don’t want to go out in the summer, too hot
- Don’t want to go out in the winter, too cold and slippery (when it snowed before Christmas the streets were packed with ice and my shoes have no grip)
- She’s not completely house trained (Because we can’t let her out in the garden alone)
- She’s afraid of her own poo (Really, she goes crazy, tries to run away, you have to bribe her with treats until she calms down)
- You have to pick up the poo and put it in the bin (yeah, well, not in out area, it almost seems like we’re the only ones who do it. Disgusting)
- She’s ashamed of her own wee (it takes her forever to pee if there’s people nearby, she has to be bursting to just get on with it)
- Dogs can attack if you get them in the wrong mood (come on, if she wanted she could tear my throat out)
- She’s a fussy eater
- Unless I get a job soon we won’t be able to afford her either (Napoleon’s transferring the house bills to us now)
- She gets lonely
- If I get angry I’ll take it out on the dog
- She’ll blow her coat (twice a year huskies do this massive shedding, I’ve seen the videos on youtube)
- Huskies are not good guard dogs
- What about when we visit my aunt for Christmas and my uncle in the summer (well, it was Autumn last year), my aunt has a very excitable spaniel and my uncle a cat
- Sometimes I think she’s a demon dog (what better disguise for a demon than a good, sweet innocent, loyal little doggie huh?) Yeah, I know, dumb reason
That’s all the cons I can come up with for now.

So, reasons to keep the dog?
- She’s lovely company
- She never barks, or howls
- She stays out of my way most of the time so sometimes I can forget she’s there
- Maybe her family will be in a position to take her back one day and it’d be nice to return her
- Walking her gets me outside
- Walking her gets me exercise
- I have been wanting a pet for a while now (but it was either a cat or a hamster, never a dog)
- She’s quite settled here
- She’s an opportunity to meet people (although most people round here can’t speak English, really it’s true they can’t)
- I kind of want to see what’ll happen when she blows her coat (Oh how much fur can a husky shed if a husky can shed fur)
- I want to see how she’ll react to my aunt’s dog and my baby cousin, he should be walking next time we see him I’m told
- She follows me around the house and I think it’s sweet
- Sometimes she lays beside me like a loyal companion, it’s pretty cute
- I love stroking the fur on her head (It’s so soft)
- Just thinking that no one wants her makes me cry
- She has two different coloured eyes and I’ve heard that’s lucky (that’s a lame reason but I wanted to put it in, although I heard that in an anime regarding a cat and it turned out to be a demon cat that killed it’s owners)
Damn, that’s all I can think of for pros.
Does that mean we should get rid of her?
Sigh.
What to do.
Well, thanks for listening all (well, I should say reading really) We’ll let you know how things go.

I have a dog, and while there are many downfalls, and life would be waaaaaay easier if he weren't around, I wouldn't give him up for anything in the world. When they come cuddle up with you, or are so excited when you get home that they wiggle, its all worthwhile. Even missed opportunities due to not finding a dog baby sitter, vet bills, etc.
