Halls of the Dark Muse

I Know I am a Hum Bug

Rate this Entry
Back when I was still in like high school I happened upon this Poetry forum called Arcane Artistry, than after a few years of so the owner decided he no longer wanted poetry to really be his main focus so he was going to close it and start a new forum that would be more of an interactive writing community but because I liked the owner and the over all community I decided to follow over to the new forum and since than he had changed or recreated his forum 2 or 3 times.

Well I started to become less and less active in his latest venture, partially because about this time I was busy with school and just had other things going on. It got to a point where I would pop in many like once a month or so and eventually I all but forgot that the forum existed until I got an e-mail from the forum board about some update or other and at that point I popped on to request the removal of my account since I had become completely inactive but said request was ignored and no response given.

Point being it has been years since I have logged on to the forum and I haven't had any contact with any of its fellow members, when all of the sudden today I keep getting e-mails from the forum notifying me of comments that have been posted on my profile page of people wishing me "Happy Birthday" and I know it is supposed to be "nice" but I find it a bit annoying because it strikes me as being completely bogus. I have not had any interaction with the forum and any of these people for ages, they haven't had any contact with me, and some of them I don't think even know me at all.

It does not mean anything, somewhere listed on the forum they just saw my user name listed as it being my birthday today and so they just gave this automatic response, even though if they had been paying the least bit of attention they would realize that I have not even been participating on the forum.

In a way it would be like if you go out to a restraint and there is a group of people there having a birthday party, and you don't know who they are but just because you know it is their birthday you decided to just walk up to the table of this group of strangers to wish them a Happy Birthday. It would just be weird and awkward.

Happy Birthday, Dark Muse! (Is it OK if I say that?)

LOL yes, since we actually do have fairly regular communication than it would be appropriate and acceptable

I am not against "Happy Birthday" I am just against the Internet mentality of feeling compelled to say it just because some forum board tells you some username has a birthday, even though they don't in the least bit know said person.

I don't think that's why it really bothers you; I think it really bothers you because people are hijacking your birthday and turning it into a means to get themselves attention. Unfortunately, I think that most of us generally operate as such, and places like Facebook thrive off of it. I think it's also the premise of many, if not all, pretensions. At any rate, I would be rather agitated by their disingenuous comments, too...maybe we're both humbugs.

The disingenuousness is truly what bothers me about it. That is one thing that I cannot stand. I am not the kind of person who goes in for that sort of thing.

    Quite agreed.
