Reflections on the puddle of life

Ouch

Rate this Entry
Those who read my previous entry may have noticed that I said nothing about how it was one of my goals to fall, spectacularly it has to be said, off my bike and fracture my elbow.

Ouch.

It's interesting how I've suddenly come to appreciate all the things that two arms are handy for. I've started making a list. It looks like this:

Typing
Doing up zips
Putting clothes on of any description. Especially socks.
Brushing hair
Opening car doors
Making a cup of tea
Gaining access to painkillers (who designs these things?)
Opening a packet of crisps
Having a shower
Cutting food
Opening a can of soup
Buttering bread
Opening a thermos flask
Opening a plastic lunch box
(yes, I may be living on fish fingers for the next few weeks)
Carrying a coat and a bag at the same time.

That's it so far. I've also noticed how nice people are when you're in need of a little assistance - numerous random strangers have helped me with my coat and little things like that - and also how lovely people are, generally, who work for the NHS. Everyone was so kind, sympathetic and considerate. They even gave me a copy of my X-ray to take home to show the kids.

Not all bad after all.

Well, in the words of the Borg: "We will adapt".

*****News update*****

It's not fractured after all. Or it may be a little bit, but we're going to work on the basis it's not. I have my arm back. It's such a relief!

Haha, oh yeah, I was totally going to remark on that.

Are you saying it now, Fifth? Geez, I'm glad it wasn't your head!!!

It's good it isn't broken, but aren't you still going to have to be careful for quite awhile even if it's cracked?

I once fell off a bike and skinned the c*** out of it. It hurt so bad we went and had it x-rayed (not broken) and I spent the next day in bed with it on a heating pad. I still remember the pain even after all these years.

Qimi you're quite right that I still need to be careful. It might not be broken, but haven't got much mobility in the arm yet. I can't straighten or bend it properly, I've got a range of something between 35 and 75 degrees, which is not much. It hurts when I turn my palm. It's still swollen, so there's definitely some soft tissue damage which is going to take a while to repair. I'm going to be off the bike for a while. And apart from the arm I've got a sore jaw and chin where I bashed that, and my left knee looks like Picasso might have painted it during his blue phase. But I'm glad it's not broken, it means I can use the arm and the more (carefully) I can exercise it, the sooner it'll get better.
I feel lucky (again) and luckier still that my train station is opening in August and I won't need to cycle anymore. I'm less dangerous on two legs than I am on wheels!

Sounds like a nasty fall, Fifth. I hope you feel better soon.

One of my engineers popped out the bicep muscles on both his arms while curling some outrageously large weight at the gym. He had to get them both operated and had to stay in some sort of fixtures for over a month, I can't remember exactly. If you think losing the function of one arm is tough, just think how little you can do with no arms. That's when you learn whether your spouse really loves you.

Well feel better Fifth. It sounds painful and debelitating.

Virgil I managed to miss this comment. Ouch. Popping your biceps must be incredibly painful. I bet he didn't try those weights again.

Thanks for stopping by and for the kind wishes. It's good to see you around. My arm is getting better. I still can't straighten it properly, and it is weak, but it's on the mend. The bruises are spectactular
