Invisible Surgery

Rate this Entry
the man with the
sightless eyes
leans over me
his hand
with rusty knife
begins its invisible
surgery

a bloodletting
the corpus christi
flows,
benign and mirthful,
down my throat
streaking the white
with the memory of birth and violence

but of all this I remain unaware
the blood is gone
the light is all around
and all I can hear is your
laughter, good, and clean,
and strong

For my son Alex.

I was - and still am - confused by a) the discordance of "rusty knife" and "invisible surgery; and b) the turbulent images in verse two, all the more so as the poem is going to end in that triumphant last verse, with that lovely half-rhyme of "gone" and "strong." And of course that this is a reminiscence of the birth of your son.

Thank you for reading, Prince. This doesn't have anything to do with a literal birth, and the last stanza is more hopeful to me, than triumphant, although I hope one day it will be.

The first stanza has things in it that are symbolic.

This sounds like a personal poem, qimissung -- one filled with memory and aspiration.

Am glad for the comment Q as I too thouht the imagery was giving birth. You have depths. Your son should be honored.

That's a good way to put it, Comedian. Your welcome, Rich. I would say it's more about rebirth, than birth, although that wasn't what I was thinking about when I wrote it.

Thanks for stopping by, the two of you. I value both your opinions.

I like this Qimi, though like is probably the wrong word. Rather, it is good. I too was confused by the rusty knife, but then I thought perhaps that the 'invisible surgery' was something about letting go, and the knife rusty because it is unfamiliar, difficult and somehow, also, out of your hands? And perhaps it is significant that the man is sightless, because this is something which can be done only by feeling and because, perhaps, there is a sense of unknowing about it. Maybe I am misreading, but that it what I read into it. That this is something painful, but at the end of it is hope?

It is a sad poem. But maybe hope is stronger. I hope for that.

"because this is something which can be done only by feeling"...

That's it, Fifth. And yes, hope is there. I have a conflicted relationship with hope, but really, you can't live without it.

Thanks for reading. I value your input, as always.
