The Krampus Comes Tonight

The Krampus Comes Tonight

Now is the time my little girls and boys
to lay you down to sleep,
place your darling heads upon
your little pillows and prepare
to drift away in to the land of slumber.

Await! What is this?
The sound of chains a rattling
in the distance?
Do you hear the laughter in your ear
which only inspires fear?
Is it the wind that howls so
or something else lurking in the
darkness of the night?

Yes! He comes tonight,
the Krampus is on the way
to drag you wicked girls and boys away,
dancing in delight
he will drive you onward with whips and chains
while he salivates in anticipation
for a taste of your supple young flesh,
perhaps he will stir you into a stew,
gnaw your bones in two.

Be still you girls and boys
for all you can do is close your eyes tight
and pray you have been good little dears
for there is no escape from his taloned grasp
when the Krampus is on the prowl.

And if you listen close you may hear
the screams of those less fortunate than you,
as he drags them away through the cold
laughing like gravel at the sight of terror
stricken faces, pleading now is much too late.

So when you lay your heads down to sleep
on this Christmas Eve,
will it be of sugar plums and candy canes
you dream? Or more hellish scenes.

I've just been checking out "scary" movies about Santa (and the Dutch Sinterklaas). I thought there was only "A Nightmare before Christmas" - but that one isn't really scary, it is actually quite cute . But it turns out there are horror movies about this theme

I never heard about the Krumpus though... Is it a "real" monster from a myth or a book or something, or did you make it/him/her up?
I'm trying to imagine what it/he/she looks like and to be honest, it would have freaked me out as a "little girl" I think I'll look over my shoulder a bit more this Christmas...

    Thank you for the poem.

The krampus derives predominantly from Austria, but can also be found in other parts of Europe including Germany, and he is the demon side-kick of Santa Claus, who follows him around to drag away naughty children away in chains. They actually have festivals where people dress up as the krampus.

This is so charming! I am just delighted to read this. It gives me ideas for children's books.

Hahahahaha! I must say, those sound like children's books I myself would quite enjoy!
