Who Needs a Baby Whn You Have Diamonds

It is that time of year again, the time to be bombarded with annoying, cheesy, irritating, badly acted, corny diamond and jewelry commercials which make us all look like shallow, materialistic whores and insult our intelligence and basic sense of decency.

Now we all know what I think of children, don't care for them, don't want no part of them, but I expect those who make the choice to have them to take proper responsibility for them.

So in one of the newest commercials in this succession of diamond/jewelry ads, (I cannot recall exactly which one it was) there is a woman sitting on the coach with her now born child on Christmas morning when her husband walks in and she looks up to him and says "It is her first Chrismas" than he walks over and reaches down and pulls out the box and opens it up to reveal some gold diamondy necklace, and says "I wonder if she will remember this day" to which she replies. "I know I will" implying of course that it is in fact the new shiny expensive jewelry that makes the occasion so memorable and now the new born life form of which she just gave birth to, in fact at this point I think she was about ready to chuck the baby out the window.

    I don't like diamonds because they're colorless. If I'm going to use a rock as a symbol of something, it shouldn't be so boring. Diamonds are boring.

    Re. the commercial: I find it sad to the point of it being actually kind of funny.

    Yes there is a certain ironic humor in them, and they do provide me with good material, it seems every year there is always one that really catches my attention and annoyance to satirize.

    I would have chucked one of my babies out the window if someone, anyone had brought me diamonds. I mean, really! Baby, out with the bathwater!

    Those commercials drive my husband crazy. As if the baby is not enough, but diamonds too...come on!
    On a superficial note:
    I love diamonds, but I love my baby too. I can't afford diamonds, so my husband bought my CZ diamond earirngs instead. They satisfy my need.

    This was a great blog posting! I'll tell you right away that nobody on God's green (er, snow-covered) earth will ever present yours fooly with diamonds, for he or she knows that me feet wouldn't touch the ground on my way straight to the hockshop. What good are jewels? Can't eat 'em, wear 'em the way you can with a comfy sweatshirt, can't dance to 'em, can't read 'em!

    There is another seasonal commercial that drives me up the wall. It opens with a little kid admiring a train set in a toy store. His mother tries to interest him in a presumably less expensive model as she tells him, "It's just as good." The kid doesn't even look at her to answer, "No, it's not." Similar scene happens with a couple of electric guitars with the kid (now a teenager) and his father in a music store. Finally, as a "grown up" he picks out the luxury car that fulfills his
    fancy.

    Gosh, how materialistic can this commercial be? Not only does it pervert the spirit of the season, it makes us Americans look as greedy and selfish as
    our foreign critics believe us to be.

    Bah freakin' humbug!

    Yes that reminds of another commerical, I think it is far a car, and it shows someone getting the biggest tree they could find and being all elaborate, and says 'No one ever wished for a smaller Christmas Gift" or something to that same effect.
