Matthew’s First Halloween

Rate this Entry
Matthew had his first Halloween, and though he was oblivious to what it was we think he enjoyed it. He went as a monkey, which we think is very appropriate. We got him a cute little outfit and you can see it in the pictures below. We only went to a few houses to trick-or-treat, my mother’s and her neighbor’s and my mother-in-law’s. He only got a few candy bars and since we aren’t allowing him to have chocolate yet the parents got to eat the candy bars.

The important update on Matthew in the past few weeks is that we finally saw the pediatric ophthalmologist, and he does have strabismus, or a cross-eyed condition. It is fairly severe, and it would have been more advantageous if he had been treated at six months. But the good news is that his eyes are otherwise perfect. His treatment will be two-fold. First, his good eye needs to be patched for three hours a day. Because his left eye is so turned inward and non-aligned with his good right eye, his brain essentially shuts down the vision coming from his left. Patching the good eye forces him to use the bad one and therefore develop brain connection to it. Second, the doctor said that he will still need a minor operation on the left eye to align the pupil. I think he said this would happen somewhere when Matthew turns two years old.

I really like this doctor, very professional and handled Matthew’s apprehension nicely. I can see why he was so highly recommended by our pediatrician. He assured us that Matthew’s eyes at the end of this would turn out perfect. To be honest, I have apprehensions myself over the surgery. My father had disastrous operations on both his eyes and was just about completely blind from mid life on. Now that was a long time ago, and lasers and computers have revolutionized eye surgery, but some things never ease one’s sensibilities.

Funny story at the doctor’s office. The doctor had a young, pretty female assistant, and Matthew kept waving to her. He didn’t wave to the doctor or anyone else, just the pretty young lady. The doctor finally said, “boy, he’s such a flirt.” Ah, what a son I have!

It’s been two days now that Matthew has worn a patch. To our surprise he has handled it very well. I thought for sure he would be crying and resisting it. The doctor warned us he might. But no, Matthew has been great. Sure, he’s put his finger up to it occasionally and gently tries to flick it off, but so far nothing rebellious. We decided to put it on in the morning when he’s more cooperative and less cranky and there is less of a need to take him out. It does make my heart drop a beat when I see him with the patch on, a tightening in my throat. Poor tyke.

So here are a couple of sets of pictures. First we gave him a Halloween cupcake Saturday night to devour and he had a ball with it. And then there are the monkey outfit pictures. Hope you like them.

Here he is devouring the cupcake:

Such pleasure:

This is a great first Halloween blog. I wanted to tell you that my best friend just had the same surgery. She has very little vision in one eye. It would have been better, but her parents weren't bery persistant with the patch when she was a child. It's amazing what a difference it made for her and it even improved her vision a little in the one eye. She had a very easy recovery, too. Also, it was a pediatric ophthalmologist that did the surgery, even though she's my age.

Motherhubbard! You're alive! Well I've had quite a few Matthew blogs. You might want to go back and see a few.

Thanks. Actually my mother has double vision because of a screwed up eye muscle in one of her eyes (don't know exactly what to call it, but it was due to a thyroid condition) and she goes to a pediatric eye doctor too, even though she's well into her seventies. The nurses always do a double take when we come into the office.

Don't worry about the eye surgery, Virgil. My son had the same problems and surgery when he was about 2 years old. They even are able to adjust the eye muscles correctly without needing to make a cut. This kind of surgery is pretty much advanced.

It looks like Matthew can stand on his own already in the last picture. He gives a much happier impression now, compared to the first pictures from Kazakhstan.

Oh dear, eye patches, is it? My sympathies to the poor boy, I know how wearing such a thing feels. Hopefully, it'll work for him.

The monkey outfit is very cute. Matthew's such a sweet baby.

    The monkey costume is adorable.

I'm sure his eyes will turn out fine, when he's grown up he won't even remember the experience. Rather than focusing on the minor trouble of the eye patch, just think of all the trouble you'll be saving him when he's older.

And look at that doctor reinforcing heteronormative assumptions, pssh. I'm sure he'll be quite the lady's man.

The monkey costume is so lovely on him
Hopefully his eyes will be just fine.. and the sooner the treatment the better it will and the safer it is for him .

Wishingyou all the best .. Its a good Halloween post.

The second and third picture are just so adorable! He is a good kid going along with the costume. I saw a lot of little babies yesterday dressed up in these cozy type outfits and they were great - because the day proved to be a little cool. I bet he loved it and had fun.

Brooke was a 1 1/2 last year and she loved it. This year she loved it even more so. Matthew will love Christmas this year for sure. They love the twinkly lights and all the shiny stuff. It will be a marvelous time for all of you. Brooke loves the Minorah, too...she loves candles. She would have loved Matthew's outfit since she favors monkeys. I will show her the photo. She is always curious about other kids and asks me what their names are.

I believe that Matthew's eyes will be just fine. I am glad he is wearing the patch. It sounds logical that the weak eye would then be strenghtened. No one looks forward to an operation; but nowdays eye surgery is so commonplace. My neighbor just had cateract surgery and now she doesn't ever have to even wear glasses anymore and she wore distance ones for her whole life. She's loving it now. Don't worry; the new doctors know what they are doing with lazers, etc.

Any cupcakes left? They do look good!haha

Great pictures of Matthew. He looks a cute lad in the suit. As Janine says it's a lovely age for this time of year. Magic.

Thank you all. I know the surgery is low risk but still it makes me nervous.

Lulim - He is really blossoming as a person now, though I didn't think past pictures didn't show he was happy.

Themis - Sounds like you had experience with them.

O-P - Good point on focusing on the future. Not sure why he was waving to her, but I remember now he was waving to the female tennis player on TV during the US Open. He's got an eye for the ladies.

Hoope - Yes the sooner the better. Thanks.

Janine - There are two left I think. Unless my wife ate them.

Paul & Qimi - Thank you.

Terrific entry. Mathhew is very cute. Loved his outfit. Agree with everyone else about the surgery--should go well. But parents worry and that is fine as well--would be more concerned if you didn't.

He looks absolutely adorable in his monkey costume! What a darling first Halloween Blog. Thanks for sharing.

Also glad that it sounds like they have a good plan for helping his eyes. I'm not surprised he's being good about wearing the patch. I can tell he's a very good and even tempered little fellow.

Like the others said, I wouldn't worry about the surgery, and I should know: I have had three of them! I did not have wall eye vision, but I should have had it... Apparently, the eye muscles managed to keep my peepers straight in spite of a massive misalignment, but that just meant that the problem remained undetected until I was in my 30's. Instead I got massive headaches due to exhausted and cramping eye muscles. Not very nice, that. Matthew will be fine, as it was detected early.

When he starts resisting the patch, let him watch the pirates veggie tale show. Its adorable, and he will never want to take it off We had a little boy at church that had to wear one, and that movie made him feel special to be God's pirate.

Wow, I missed the last few commentators here. Thanks Petrarch, Claes, and Steph.

Steph, he now starting to try to take it off. I will have to try your suggestion. Thanks.
