Matthew’s First Halloween

Matthew had his first Halloween, and though he was oblivious to what it was we think he enjoyed it. He went as a monkey, which we think is very appropriate. We got him a cute little outfit and you can see it in the pictures below. We only went to a few houses to trick-or-treat, my mother’s and her neighbor’s and my mother-in-law’s. He only got a few candy bars and since we aren’t allowing him to have chocolate yet the parents got to eat the candy bars.
The important update on Matthew in the past few weeks is that we finally saw the pediatric ophthalmologist, and he does have strabismus, or a cross-eyed condition. It is fairly severe, and it would have been more advantageous if he had been treated at six months. But the good news is that his eyes are otherwise perfect. His treatment will be two-fold. First, his good eye needs to be patched for three hours a day. Because his left eye is so turned inward and non-aligned with his good right eye, his brain essentially shuts down the vision coming from his left. Patching the good eye forces him to use the bad one and therefore develop brain connection to it. Second, the doctor said that he will still need a minor operation on the left eye to align the pupil. I think he said this would happen somewhere when Matthew turns two years old.
I really like this doctor, very professional and handled Matthew’s apprehension nicely. I can see why he was so highly recommended by our pediatrician. He assured us that Matthew’s eyes at the end of this would turn out perfect. To be honest, I have apprehensions myself over the surgery. My father had disastrous operations on both his eyes and was just about completely blind from mid life on. Now that was a long time ago, and lasers and computers have revolutionized eye surgery, but some things never ease one’s sensibilities.
Funny story at the doctor’s office. The doctor had a young, pretty female assistant, and Matthew kept waving to her. He didn’t wave to the doctor or anyone else, just the pretty young lady. The doctor finally said, “boy, he’s such a flirt.” Ah, what a son I have!
It’s been two days now that Matthew has worn a patch. To our surprise he has handled it very well. I thought for sure he would be crying and resisting it. The doctor warned us he might. But no, Matthew has been great. Sure, he’s put his finger up to it occasionally and gently tries to flick it off, but so far nothing rebellious. We decided to put it on in the morning when he’s more cooperative and less cranky and there is less of a need to take him out. It does make my heart drop a beat when I see him with the patch on, a tightening in my throat. Poor tyke.
So here are a couple of sets of pictures. First we gave him a Halloween cupcake Saturday night to devour and he had a ball with it. And then there are the monkey outfit pictures. Hope you like them.
Here he is devouring the cupcake:
Such pleasure:
My mother handing him a Kit Kat and a Snickers. I love that tail.
