Anyone Know Anything About Computers?

Rate this Entry
I have been having this weird problem recently with my lap top, and at first I thought that the AC adaptor was just going bad, but I did not want to buy a new one, and still have the same problems, so I called my sister to confer with my brother-in-law about the problem.

Basically what has been happening is that when the computer is plugged in, it runs really slowly, but as soon as I unplugged and go just off the battery power, it workes completely normally again.

My brother-in-law said that if it was a bad adaptor it should not be doing that and he never heard of the problem before. So I tried to goggle it an it seems that a lot of people are experiencing this problem, but no one is really providing any solutions for it.

If I cannot figure out what is wrong and how to make it go away, or if it does not just miraculously leave the same way it arrived, I will probably have to wait until the holidays to have my brother-in-law look at it in person and see if he can figure something out.

I agree with your brother-in-law, I don't think an adapter has anything to do with how a computer runs. Either you have enough power to run or it shuts off. There's no in between. I'm no expert but I think it's just coincidence.

Thought the adaptor may not be the problem I do not think it is pure coincidence, becasue it is not a one time thing. It is consistant that it works better on battery than plugged in, and I googled it, and it seems several other people have been experincing the same thing, computers that run slow plugged in but fine when on battery, but it does not seem that anyone has any solutions for the problem.

    Hi

If the adapter is in any way flawed, in time, it will ruin your battery. I strongly suggest that you stop using it right now and get yourself another adapter. Or even better, if you want to be really sure, try to borrow a different adapter and try it. If you don't have any trouble with it, then it's your adapter being malfunctioning. I hope this helps. Good luck

Thank you for the advice. I was going to try using another adaptor but I could not find any in the house that would fit this computer.

Welcome Try to get a replacement as soon as you can. Batteries are extremely sensitive to wrong adapters. You know, a wrong adapter tends to make the battery go boom (figure of speech, no actual big explosion, but the battery might die), so be careful.

Do you sit in a different place when the thing is plugged in than you do when you're unplugged? If you have to sit somewhere so that the cord can reach your laptop, then maybe some other device in the vicinity of the outlet is just screwing with the internet signal. My internet doesn't work if anyone in my appartment uses the microwave.

DM, are any of your settings different when on battery power compared to AC? I know on my loptop the screen resolution is set to a higher resolution when on AC rather than battery power, because it uses more power. If there's a fault with your adaptor it may be burning more power because it recognises it's on AC, but not actually be getting the power to run it. If that makes any sense? Max's suggestion of trying a different adaptor sounds like good advice.

    To Juniper:

I gerneally sit in the same place when plugged in or using just the battery power, and it has been fine for years now, it just started having problems a few weeks or so ago.

    To Fifth:

Well I know that when I plug the computer in the screen gets brighter.

I would back up Max on his advice. The adapter is bad and that will kill your battery. What do you do then?

    Good luck.

I don't know anything about laptops, as they are too rich for the blood o' the likes o' me. "Pong II," the desktop computer we use has some strange quirks, I'll tell you.
You've probably already tried this, but I'll mention it in the hopes that it's not lame-brained. Anyway, we've noticed that when Pong II runs more slowly than normal, it will pick up a little speed if we
go to the Control Panel and either clear the Internet Files and/or "clean the disk."
(We access the disk-cleaning device through "System Tools.") Sometimes unwanted downloads -- usually with a file name ending ".dll" -- can slow down the works. Cleaning the disk will delete those
    unwanted files.

Again, forgive me if this is a simple remedy and one you've already tried.
