Cute Baby Moments

It’s been a couple of weeks since my last Matthew update, so here’s another. We’re getting the hang of the daily routine: Bedtime at eight, up at eight in the morning, breakfast, play, morning nap, lunch, out for an afternoon event (park, store, grandma’s), afternoon nap, dinner, play, and back to bed. It’s easy but you go bonkers trying to keep him occupied during the play time, and worry about him getting into trouble if you let him go unobserved. Of course during the week I'm at work and the burden falls on my dear wife.

We also had our first pediatrician visit last week. I’m happy to say that other than his cross eyes (strabismus) he is perfectly healthy. One always wonders with an adoption, especially a foreign adoption. Most of the medical analysis from Kazakhstan was ridiculous. Matthew is pretty much on par for a child his age, perhaps just slightly behind in development, though as I look at the list of what a child his age should be doing, I don’t see anything he’s behind in. As to his size, Matthew is average in weight and on the shorter side in height, which makes him a bit over weight. Perhaps that’s why the pediatrician rated his muscle tone as poor, which is a little baffling. He seems pretty strong to me. What kind of muscle tone is good for a one year old? I don’t know. What did she expect, a body builder?

The hardest part of the medical exam was drawing blood. That was hard. First she tried the left arm, jabbing him to no avail, then the right arm, and then deciding the best place would be the neck vein, and even there the right side was to no avail but then finally success on the left side of the neck. I had to hold him down the whole time as she jabbed and finally drew blood. The screaming was excruciating.

We have an appointment for the end of the month with a pediatric eye specialist to see what to do about his eyes. But she found him to be a happy child with a “bubbly” personality. He’s a good baby.

The day after the pediatrician visit has been the only day where Matthew has had a hard day. He received a number of vaccinations at the doctor and we think he had a mild fever the next day. He was extremely cranky and barely ate. We gave him a child ibuprofen and it helped, but come night time he refused to go to sleep and cried all evening. It’s amazing how long a baby will cry continuously for, nonstop for hours. You would think he would tire himself out crying that long, but no. It was after midnight when I finally got fed up, put him into his sleep position (on his stomach), held him down for five seconds until he stopped resisting, rubbed his back for a few minutes, and amazingly he fell asleep. I should have done that hours ago…lol.

I guess that’s enough for now. I’ll let you have some images of our routine through what I’ll call cute baby moments. Here’s what comes to mind. I’m sure there are more. Let me know which one you liked. I’ve got a couple of new pictures at the end too.

Cute Baby Moment #1
Listening to his baby talk is just adorable. He’ll sit in the crib and babble away as if he knows how to speak and speaks his mind. I listen outside his room, hiding. There is something very endearing about the tone and timbre of a baby’s voice.

Cute Baby Moment #2
The way he opens his mouth wide while being fed and says “ahhh” to hurry me up with the next spoonful is just too cute.

Cute Baby Moment #3
When he’s laying down naked getting his diaper changed and he decides to pee, the way the urine flows in an arc looks like he would make a good cupid fountain.

Cute Baby Moment #4
When he drinks his bottle, he’ll hold it up at a high angle like he’s playing a trumpet. When he does that, Daddy will put his mouth up against the back end start toot tooting and watching Matthew’s eyes curl into a smile.

Cute Baby Moment #5
Pediatrician told us about brushing his teeth. So we bought him a toddler toothbrush. To our surprise there is such a thing. And we thought no way would he ever allow us to brush it, but he actually enjoys it. He likes the feel of the bristles against his four teeth. He laughs. I tell him he’s dentally challenged.

Cute Baby Moment #6
His pacifier has a handle on the end and on occasion while he has the nipple in his mouth I’ll put the handle in my mouth and we’ll smile into each other’s eyes. One day while doing that, Matthew took the pacifier out of his mouth and put the nipple into mine.

Cute Baby Moment #7
Matthew seems to know how inexperienced daddy is at dressing him. Amazing how daddy always gets wrong on how to put on his one piece footsie pajamas. Daddy puts the footsies in first and then twists Matthew’s arms in trying to get them in. Finally Daddy starts all over and puts the arms in first. There’s always more crying when daddy dresses Matthew.

Cute Baby Moment #8
Matthew said his first multi syllabic word yesterday where they weren’t repetitions. He said “dah-day.” Actually he started pronouncing it “da-daaaaay.”

Cute Baby Moment #9
Matthew has discovered how bouncy and cushy the couch is. He’ll stand and drop himself onto his back like he’s falling on a trampoline.

Cute Baby Moment #10
Matthew has discovered how to play with his food. He’ll pull it out of his mouth, shred it, toss it to the dog, finger-paint with it on his tray, and generally fly all over the place. Why is it when daddy feeds him there’s food particles around his mouth, on his chin, by his eyes, on the tip of his nose, up on his brow, and even behind his ears?

Cute Baby Moment #11
Matthew’s favorite sleeping position is on his belly with his knees pulled up and his butt up in the air. How does he find that comfortable?

How sweet he is he, and believe me babies sleep any position possible if comfortable.

I'm here after a long break but I read all the previous blogs and saw all Matthew's pictures too. He is adorable in every picture and the one where he is drying up after a bath, in one of the previous blogs, reminded me of Stallone in Rocky.
I love the 'Dare to Dream' pillow.
Strange as you may find it Virg, he does look blissfully comfortable in his favourite sleeping posture.

    Thank you ladies.

Mumuksha - He is comfortable, that's what's so surprising. And I know what picture you are talking about. That is one of my favorites of him too. In fact it's my background at the moment.

Wonderful post except, of course, for the part about you having to hold him down while the paediatrician jabbed around for a convenient place from which to draw blood. Poor Matthew - and poor you.

He's adorable. And it sounds like you all are having so much fun!
As to his eye, probably they will put him in glasses. My son has that, and that's what they did for him, anyway. Maybe they have some other solutions, now, I don't know.

The whole story of your adoption has been the most wonderful and inspiring thing on here. And now to see you rewarded and fulfilled with a beautiful Son makes me go all soppy inside.

Just reading about the screaming during the blood test was disturbing. But aside from that, this blog put a big smile on my face.

So sweet. Glad to hear his development is normal. I was so glad when we realized that JS was not learning impaired (retarded) and had normal development.

The mild fever after the shots is a pain- JS had a fever too. My friend always schedules shots for Friday so they have the weekend to deal with the fever. Sounds like you did what all parents do when facing a screaming baby.

I continue to enjoy this blog. Thanks Virgil for sharing as always.

Great post Virgil. The cranky nights are tough. The rewards are great though.

Glad to read this Virgil. My kids always slept like that too -- with their rears up in the air. . .like you, I can't believe that's comfortable, but a lot of babies sleep like that.

That last one really brought back memories; my son used to sleep that way, too. Now Brooke is a side sleeper - funny how different kids can be. I wondered if you knew about the toothbrush for toddlers. Brooke has had several but usually she resists a bit. Her new toothpaste was Tommy the Tank and she could not wait to try it the night I babysat her. She had a matching toothbrush and it was battery operated and she seemed to love it, too. I told her she did a great job and she had sparkly teeth. My son did that same trick with the pacifier....Brooke would often offer it to him...too funny...I guess they like to share.

That is great he is starting to talk. Is Ma ma jealous he said Da da? Is he standing by himself yet? He sounds like such a pleasant and good natured baby. His photos are so cute....he's a good looking kid.

I hated it when Brooke had to get inoculations. It hurts the parents more than the kid. My son said on their first appointment to do so - my daughter cried a few seconds and my wife for hours. Brooke had to get blood drawn too because of her allergies. I felt so bad. I believe her reaction was pretty much like that of Matthew's. Poor kid having the take it from his neck - that sounds painful.

I am confused about one point. Which of the drs said he lacked good muscle tone? It's obvious they were wrong. He looks to be very sturdy and right on par for his age. I am so happy he is so healthy and he seems to be a fast learner. He seems to love his new toys you have for him. He always looks busy and active.

I am so happy you are into the routine and he is home there with you and your wife in your loving home.

Glad to hear you are all doing well. Vaccinations can often cause reactions, there's not a great deal you can do about that really. Just dose them up on baby paracetamol and watch over them. Wouldn't worry about the muscle tone thing; didn't you mention in one of your previous blogs that he didn't used to get much exercise at the orphanage? It's probably just related to that. No doubt after a few months of dragging you guys around he'll be ship shape. Everything sounds good. Development is always individual; my son was always behind on feeding himself, and had a bottle well past the time he was 'supposed' to have switched to a cup. The health visitors used to tut, but the fact is he could do it he just didn't want to. Never much of an eater, my boy, and anything eating related was always miles down his list of priorities. If Matthew seems fine to you, then he's fine. You and pussnboots would be the first to pick up on any real problems. The blood taking sounds awful. I hated taking mine for vaccinations, so I can imagine how distressing that must have been for you all.

Just a word of advice on the toothbrushing. Toddler toothbrushes are fine (they generally need a smaller, softer brush) but don't bother with toddler or 'child' toothpaste. It's no good. Ordinary toothpaste, with just a teeny amount on the brush does the trick just fine.

You're already sounding like a proud (translate...ever-so-slightly defensive ) parent. That's wonderful. It's so lovely to see you all growing together as a family.

Janine: Matthew has already started to learn how to brush his teeth. After every meal I get his toothbrush and start brushing his teeth and then let him take over. He likes it!!. I have no reason to be jealous over Matthew saying Da Da. Afterall, he says Ma Ma all the time and besides if anyone should be jealous it's Virgil since I'm home with him all day and I get to see all the firsts first.

The pediatrician that we took him to in the city said his muscle tone was low. This doesn't surprise me since he didn't get much excercise while he was at the baby house.

Fifth: thank you for pointing out that a child's development is always individual. I also want to point out that because he spent his first year in a Baby House his development is slightly behind but not by much. The pediatrician called it "transitionally delayed".

pussnboots, that is fantastic he brushes after every meal and by himself. I have to coax Brooke at night to brush before bed and she needs a little assistence and she is a year older than he is. I think Matthew is right on target. My son was small and he didn't walk until past his first birthday -a few months or so. Brooke was the same. I agree with Fifth, all kids develop at different speeds. My son's friends child had the low muscle development and they worked with her and she is totally fine now.

It's true that you get to see more of the firsts. I felt badly about my granddaughter being in daycare because I kept thinking they might see her firsts as well. It didn't seem to work out that way and there are still plenty of firsts to look forward to. I am glad Matthew is so happy and he calls you Ma Ma. Is that the most beautiful word in the world? I know when Brooke calls me Mum Mum it sounds like heaven. I also love the sound of baby and toddlers little voices. Nothing compares to those innocent little voices and their first years.

Cute Baby Moment #1: Be sure to record it for later. You may have to hide the mic though: The first time I tried to record my daughter she just went mute at the first sight of the mic and sat there staring at it. She stayed that way for a couple of minutes and then proceeded to throw up on it.

Cute Baby Moment #2: You just wait until he decides not to eat and that open mouth transforms into a thin determined (and firmly closed) line. it could happen anytime now.

Cute Baby Moment #11: Well... It seems like a good position if you are about to drop a load in the diapers...

Oh I've been away for a few days for work. Thank you all for your comments.

As to that sleeping position, someone pointed out to me that it might be a recall from in the womb.

All your Cute Baby Moments are lovable! I can't say which is the best.
Do you know that "day" in Russian means "give me"? Your baby speaks Russian and understands English :-) overly intelligent toddler!

Thank you for posting! I LOVE YOUR BLOGS! Every parent experiences these things but not each of us is able to tell about them to others in such way as you do.

As for vaccination, my older daughter who is 29 now is still be afraid of injections - probably a bad experience from her childhood.
