day in a life

coffee and everything else

How perfect is that first cup of coffee in the morning. It's even better than all the other cups of coffee I drink for the rest of the day. Something about the taste of this dark drink that brings so much more than any other beverage could, tea would come close but it's not the same, not in the morning.

Last night I was listening to the Beatles and lying on the floor reading Lord of the Rings with my son sleeping in the next room and the dog sleeping at my side, I realized that this was exactly what I wanted when I broke up with my ex. No tv, just me being me and doing what I want to do. I really love this life I have right now, but at the same time I do want someone to share it with me. I don't want it to be just anybody, it would have to be someone who could also spend the evening listening to old records, reading all night.... But I am not looking for that someone right now. I am gonna enjoy this alone time first.

My first assignment for the sci-fi class is about the movie Donnie Darko. it is one of my favorite movies so I am excited about it. I found it on VHS in my closet yesterday and watched it. I am gonna watch it again tonight or tomorrow before I finish the assignment. then next week it's 'Snow Crash' by Neal Stephenson, I am really looking forward to it. I checked him out on wikipedia and he seems very interesting. Also I am very interested in sci-fi but I haven't read a lot in that genre so I am excited about that. It would be cool to study it more when I get to college...

I have the same teacher for both classes so I definetly need to make sure to do my best in both, but these are so interesting subjects I can't do that bad, right?....

I like sci fi - especially the new ideas. I'm currently reading a Neil Asher called Orbus. It's the third book on the subject of a planet called Spatterjay. The ideas are great. It has this virus that takes over the body to optimise survival and makes the infected very strong and difficult to kill. The nub of this story is that the virus has stored the gathered genetic data of all the species it has infected over a huge amount of time and can resurrect a long dead species by changing the host if it provides the optimal circumstance for survival. The bit I'm reading now is ath the point where the resurrected species which the virus has transformed the host into is a highly advanced and dangerous alien. It's hotting up.

Sci Fi's great. Have you read much else?

I'm quite fond of Stephenson, I read most of his novels when I was in high school, and I still pick up his new novels when I see them at book shops.

Be prepared to be overwhelmed with pseudo-facts though, Stephenson is in the vein of "hard sci-fi" rather than "soft" like Orwell, Bradbury, or Huxley. He is very much using the form to explore what the effects of new technology will be on people. But at the same time he has a good sense of humour that pervades the work, which is helpful when you have virtually no idea what he's talking about anymore.

Snowcrash is the prototypical post-cyberpunk sci-fi novel (or maybe it could be defined as a late cyberpunk novel), it's a good read.

Ah, listen to all you caffeine junkies

Helga, I love the way that if you read your blogs in sequence you can actually feel how much you're progressively relaxing, becoming more confident and self assured and actualised. It's lovely.

I love Donnie Darko too. It's one of my favourite movies.

I haven't read much sci-fi,a few Star trek novels and a few short stories by J.G. Ballard... maybe a something I am forgetting but mainly this, but that only excites me even more about this class....
