Mary Magdelene Church is 900 years old this year.

As I was cycling back to the office today from my teaching venue, I remembered that my wife had mentioned something about the church being 900 years old this year. It’s only up the road from where I teach, so I decided to take a short detour and have a look.

(As you can see, I still have my England flag proudly upon my bike. I think I'll keep it on until the next European cup - or until it falls off anyway.)

It sits on the side of a small hill; it’s a lovely church, though I’ve never been in, which catches your eye as you go past along the road. It is set in a green part of Coventry, Wyken Croft, which has been left undeveloped. It emerges from the trees and surprises you. The first time I saw it was from the bus, and I was craning my head to get a better look.

900 years old! When I was lazily thinking about the next celebration of 1000 years I thought “Oh that will be an important one”. I then realised that I won’t be around for that of course – nor will any of the family or you. It put the age of the place into a bit of perspective - especially with the scenic graveyard!

It was a very nice detour anyway.

Unfortunately I think their website is defunct.

Thanks a lot Comedian. They're fun to do, and there's lots of material around here.

No doubt of that. I would love to be able to attend a service there. Oh, well, I can dream.

Wow, it's really hard for Americans to conceptualize an insittuion that is 900 years old. Thanks for this Paul. I too would love to attend or at least visit. Too bad none of the sites had a picture of the inside of the church.

    Thanks qimi and Virgil.

Yes - I didn't have much time to drop in as I was on my way between work sites. If I find a picture of the inside, I'll drop it in.

I love your photoblogs Paul. This is such a lovely peaceful blog. The church is very pretty; it always surprises me how small old buildings are, but perfectly formed.

Love the flag on the back of your bike. Is it going to be there until it drops off

Thanks Fifth. The church is a real eye catcher when you pass it. The other side of the road from the church has an estate, but the setting behind it is greenbelt land.

I'll definately keep the flag on until the end of the world cup.
