Earth Smells: A List

Rating: 3 votes, 5.00 average.
Here are the top 5 earthy smells that will ever grace your olfactory nerve:

  1. The steam from peeled potatoes boiling in a pot of water

  2. The morning air after mowing the grass

  3. Dry yerba mate tea

  4. The dust trail that a pick-up leaves after speeding down a gravel road in the dry August heat

  5. The methane bubbles that tumble up from the mucky river-bottom

Each of these smells brings me a joy of hearth, comfort, and simplicity.

Good ones, JW and DB. OK, OK, I have to add a few more:

    * the air after a rainstorm
*your house after you've been away for awhile
*sheets that have dried in the sun (or any clothing that has dried in the sun, for that matter)
*clothes that have just been ironed
    *Christmas Day
    *the smell of a creek

Is it methane that gives them that funky smell, Comedian? I did not know.

Yep -- methane gives off that sewage/hamburger fart smell -- usually in boggy or mucky creek beds or swamps. I felt that I needed to get something intestinal in my list.

Didn't you write a poem about farts?

Those are most excellent smells, DM. (Slaps forehead) How could I forget the smell of a wood-burning fire!!! D'oh! It's terribly ironic that I can think of so many things that smell good, because my sense of smell is not even that acute, lol.

Hehe I guess I myself am not so big on the sense of smell I had trouble coming up with 5 things that I could think of which smell good.

Good thread. I can't think of much different than ones already posted. I have to say i really love the smell of spring time flowering time, especially the dogwood trees.

I've never smelled your number 5, Comedian, methane gas from a river bottom?

Those are great lists, Paul and 1n. I especially love 'slightly smelly boys' and 'the smell of cinnamon trees in India.'

Really, these are quite beautiful. They are assuming the aspect of 'found' poetry. My personal favorites are JuniperWoolf's and MotherHubbard's as a whole.

And how could we forget coffee, which might be the best smell in the world?
