The Year 2554

Rate this Entry
Sunday was Buddha Day, year 2554 in the Buddhist calendar.

We usually go over to the Dhamma Talaka Peace Pagoda in Birmingham, but were unable to do so this year.

Here is the Pagoda:

Tha Pagoda has a really nice feel to it, and it is used for teachings, meditation and hosting events such as this year's Buddha day. It has relics in a small alcove in the roof, and I was fortunate enough to go up and see their installation in the dome of the Pagoda.

Birmingham is now a Holy City because it has this Peace Pagoda.

The project to build it was run by Dr. Rewata Dhamma, a Burmese Monk who was tireless in his efforts to establish a Buddhist University in Birmingham. He achieved an amazing amount before he passed away, yet he still had time for visitors who dropped by, as I can testify.

My wife and I first took the children over there about 12 years ago, as they were beginning to construct the temple. Dr Rewata Dhamma very kindly took us to see the site, and held my then 6 - year old's hand there and back. He was very unassuming and explained where it was all going to be laid out. It was only when we saw photos of Dr. Rewata Dhamma with HH The Dalai Lama and The Pope back at the old Vihara, that we realised what an important figure he was.

What usually happens on Buddha day is that there is a service in the Pagoda followed by a meal provided by the supporters of the Vihara. After the Monks have eaten, then everyone tucks into a meal for all. It is all very friendly and informal, with young children and their parents wandering around the grounds.

There are then prayers and announcements in the Pagoda, with visiting speakers, various Buddhist groups from around the Birmingham area and other local religious leaders.

If ever you're in the Holy City of Birmingham, then you might like to pop over to Ladywood and see the Dhamma Talaka Peace Pagoda. You're sure to find a warm welcome.

How wonderful Paul. That is fascinating. If ever in Birmingham I will have to do so.

Is Birmingham D.H. Lawrence country? How far is Birmingham from Eastwood? I have promised myself that one day I have to check out Lawrence's origins.

Hi Virgil. It's not too far - 40-50 miles just roughly guessing from the map. Birmingham is the second city and has a good City Centre.

Sweet lord! - when did Birmingham become a Holy City?

Are you not brewing trouble for the future when factions start fighting for their "Holy City"? ;-)

    In a Buddhist Holy City?

I suppose they might want the relics for which the Pagoda has become a place of pilgrimmage. They are installed in the dome - or shouldn't have mentioned that?
