Revolt Against Closets

Rate this Entry
I have a long time aversion to the closet and that whole system of hanging up clothes, I really do not know who first came up with the idea, but I do not find it in the least bit an improvement. For me it just makes things all the more time consuming and inconvenient than they need to be.

Every time I have to put my clothes away, it is always a big hassle that takes up way more of my time than I think needs to be dedicated to that particular activity. I have always have trouble with the hangers, the clothes will either keep falling off the hanger, or the hangers won't go in right, or become tangled together, and I end up yelling at my closet.

Then it doesn't help that I never want to deal with it, so I will put it off and end up accumulating piles of clothes on my floor for weeks or sometimes months at a time until I finally decide I have to do something about it.

I have come to the conclusion that for me the ideal method of storing my clothes would be to kick it old school and just have trunks. It would take all of 2 seconds to just throw my clothes in a trunk and that is all the amount of time I need to spend on putting my clothes away. To make it easier I could have different trunks for separate things, a trunk for jeans, a trunk for t-shirts, a trunk for blouses, and so forth. Than just have a small closet area for dresses and skirts.

And digging through a trunk to get my clothes to wear really would not differ all that much from picking my clothes off the floor, which I often find is in fact easier than having to search through my closet for anything.

I agree. The only reason I hang my stuff up is because a) the mice will nest in them and b) my laundry bag is full. I am appalled when anyone tells me "you should hang your stuff up." Any kind of folding, hanging, rolling, etc takes too much time and effort. I'm with you all the way on the whole trunk thing.

I like hanging~ less ironing and I can easily see what's there. Have you tried the plastic hangers with the notches that catch things so they don't fall off?

Haha well I don't bother ironring, if my clothes do happen to get wrinkled, oh well.

Yes I do have some of those, but they don't always work for all my clothes. And it does not help that I cannot be bothered to organizine my cloest so everything is just jammed in haphazrdly.

Me and you are the same on this Muse, I prefer to not hang up clothes too, but unfortunately I have a harpy of a wife who gets after me over and over about it.

I have a loving husband who handles laundry a lot of the time knowing that I hate it. I normally deal with the dishes as trade.

You fail to mention Mr Virgie that I am the one that ends up putting your clothes back in your closet.

    Harpy wife indeed

We have an arrangement - I hang the clothes, my wife washes them. It's a boring job, but I don'tlke cluttering up the place with piles of clothes - otherwise it means I can't get to the other clutter!

Plus - ever tried finding two matching socks in a dark winter morning, half asleep, with a sleeping wife, cursing and trying to be quiet? The times I've gone to work with two odd socks or my cycling shirt or jumper inside out. Koh! I'd better hang the damn things up and put away...

I tend to pile things on my dresser. I'm busy! What can I say? I was in my room a moment ago and happened to look up and it scared me. It was like Birnam Wood, coming to get me.

The trunk idea is a good one, but trunks are large; wouldn't they take up a lot of room?

Yes that is the problem with trunks, I do not have room in my room for one, and certainly not for more than one, and well all my clothes wouldn't fit in a single trunk. So for now it is just a fantasy

Someday though I may actually get my closest reorganized to just have shelves or drawers.
