Four Seasons

For the first time of this year today I did something I love doing – sitting, or more truthfully lounging, on my deck and reading, even catching a little catnap. It is really peaceful in the back and on a warm afternoon the only sound back there is that of the birds chirping and rustling through the trees, engaged in whatever social entanglements birds entangle themselves in. Now mind you, I don’t have a large backyard. I do live in the city, and city plots are small, and, while Staten Island is residential – suburban-esk, but I wouldn’t call it suburban but certainly not inner city New York - I do have an incredible private and serene space back there. Most of my city block neighbors hardly spend any time in their back yards, and my attached wall neighbor (my house is attached on one side) has no deck at all, so there is nothing for them to step out to. My non-attached neighbor does have a deck, a large one at that, but he’s told me that his family has allergies to, oh, nature I guess, and they hardly are ever back there, the sole occasion might be he, the father, out barbecuing on the grill, but bringing in a plate of food for the rest of the family.

But what makes my backyard especially private is that across from my yard is a convent with several acres of free space, filled with trees on the perimeter of the property. Now having nuns as neighbors is even better than good neighbors because nuns never have a ruckus party. Actually in the eighteen years I’ve lived here, I could probably count on my two hands days the nuns have had an outdoor event. And given the space between my house and their building – oh I would guess a couple of hundred yards – my back yard is sealed off from most city sounds. But what’s particularly wonderful is that the convent’s open center lawn and tall trees around the perimeter, including along the back of my property, induce many birds to visit and socialize. And given that Staten Island happens to have bird sanctuary parks, and being it’s along the coast, we do have a wide variety of bird species. And they do stop around my back, to my pleasure, diversion, and repose.

And so today I had the chance to finally relax for a couple of hours and lie on a lounge chair in the back and read …and snooze. With a nice glass of wine at my side I was able to nearly finish Hesse’s Steppenwolf which I had on hold for nearly a month. It was such a nice spring day, warmer than typical for this time of year and in the shade there was a cool breeze. Having finally completed the baby’s room renovations, I had absolutely no guilt feelings for doing nothing, though I know there are a host of other chores, but hey I completed a milestone and that deserves a perk. So wine, the lounge chair, a good book, and tranquility. Ah, if heaven is like this…

Now in honor of Lady Wentworth, who had this marvelous idea about a year ago, I have taken pictures of a view of my back from the deck for all four seasons. Whatever happened to Lady Wentworth? She was such an endearing young lady. About a year ago she posted four pictures from the same spot of her back, each taken in one of the four seasons. I thought that was such a great idea that I did this same this past year myself and was hoping to share that with her. But it’s probably been a year since she’s been back to Lit Net, and so I will finally take this opportunity to post these pictures now without her. I do hope everything is well with you, Lady Went, and that one day you come back here.

So here are eight pictures (two for each season since I could not capture a complete view with one angle) taken for Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.

That is my weeping cherry blossom in spring time bloom.

Flowers and potted vegetable plants in the summer. You can see the convent trees in the back.

Things fading in the fall.

And winter snow.

Hope you found this interesting.

I loved this line: "Engaged in whatever social entanglements birds entangle themselves in." lol

I know you don't love the snow, but it is awful pretty :D I love your trees, and now that I have a picture to put with a weeping cherry I may give into temptation and buy one from the landscaping place next door.

You have a beautiful backyard, Virgil! I'm jealous! I'll have to put up some pics of my wonderful spaghetti-string property of dirt sometime.
You know, for an engineer you sure know how to string words together. As for the relaxation, it's spring. You're probably low on vitamin D after this winter. A little catnap in the sun never hurt anyone!

Your backyard is gorgeous! I'm suitably jealous.

Oh thank you. I'm really lucky with the location of my house. There's nothing but trees behind me and that's rare for a city house. If you look at the third picture from the bottom and you look through the branches of the weeping cherry, you can see the outline of a brick building. That's the convent. All those trees are rather tall as well. The deck is on the second floor of the house. The weeping cherry is taller than the house, must be four stories high, and some of those pines in the convent property have to be five stories high. The birds just love them.

Thank you L.M. I kind of liked that sentence too.

Skib, my writing has really improved now that I've been trying to write these blogs as best as I can. I didn't learn how to write from writing engineering reports, though to be honest it did keep my writing sharp many years ago.

Convents, nuns and woods sounds very exciting ;-)

    Love the greenery! It's beautiful!

One of my dream is own a property with couple of acres of woods and a lake...I know I dream too much...but that would be my paradise on earth...

Oh I wouldn't call it woods Lote, it's just a few trees. I do live in the city and my neighbor's houses are on top of me on both sides. But it is relatively private given the convent.

    Thank you Lote and Themis.

Nice pictures Virgil, though your fence panels need painting

It's nice to kick back and relax in a natural environment. It must be especially important if you're living in the city. I'd go insane without green spaces around me. I bet nuns make good neighbours too. Sounds lovely.

I know. Actually they are some sort of plastic and that's some sort of residue from plants pressed up against it. I've been meaning to use a bleach cleaner to it. Actually that's a steel deck (you can't see the floor in any of the pictures) and it needs to be scraped and painted, sort of like a battle ship. Last time I did it was some ten years ago. It's next on my list of major projects and I was hoping to do it this spring, but on days I was free to tackle it, the weather hasn't cooperated. At this point it might have to wait until after Kazakhstan.

    Thank you.

The pictures are pretty. And while it may not be a wooded area, it kind of looks that way in the pictures.

I would love to have something like that, or if I was wealthier, a few acres. Our little neighborhood has lots of trees, so that's OK.

Beautiful images Virgil -- I'd have never guesses you'd have that sort of environment around you on Staten Island.

Thanks. People only think of Manhattan when they think of NYC. It's very diverse actually and Staten Island has all sorts of wooded areas, though let me repeat, my back is not wooded; it just appears to be.

Your place must be worth a mint! Staten Island is nice in that regard. It is nice to see pictures of people's homes, it makes them seem more real.

I wouldn't say it's worth a mint. Hardly actually. My wife wants to move but i refuse. I did got very lucky with the location. I'm not sure the seller way back then realized how ideal the back was. Actually he was an orthodox Jew and I think he hated the idea of being next to the convent. There is a very large crucifix right behind those trees that was much more visible when the trees were smaller and he could have had a religious reaction (idols) against it. Anyway, I've always been afraid that the convent gets sold and the property gets developed into housing. Yikes would that really turn this all around.

I can understand how the seller would be bothered by the cross hanging over his house.
Funny thing how a religious center can add peace to your property, because there is land. Somehow seeing grass and trees comforts us. I love the zen feeling when I daydream in the backyard. My best friend has a house in Teaneck across from a synagogue.
