In Search of Solitude...

Rate this Entry
In our modern hectic life I guess there is very little room for solitude. We are constantly on the move. Either physically going from A to B - and for those who work there is no escape from this - or mentally - hopping channel after channel, or going from one website to another.

Some equate solitude with loneliness. But it's not. Loneliness is when you desire the company of others and don't have it. Solitude is when you have the company of others but choose to be alone.

Those who read books I am guessing also value solitude because reading books is also a solitary experience.

I have always enjoyed solitude. Not that I am anti-social or socially enept or something but rather it's in my nature. In my character. I could happily walk the wilderness on my own or sit down on a river bank and watch the water flow. Others in this situation would become restless or get bored.

I can say - I enjoy my own company.

Is that an arrogant approach? A selfish position?

Does anyone else enjoy their own company?

I wonder how many....

I enjoy my own company :)

I don't get enough time to just sit and be by myself, so I find that I crave solitude more than I ever did when I was younger and took time each day to myself. I would sit in the early hours of the morning (late hours of the night depending on how you categorize 2 a.m.) and enjoy the silence. I would read a book or sketch. When the spring thunderstorms would move through I would open my bedroom window and soak in the sounds and lights.

I don't think it is selfish at all. We all need time to ourselves, but some of us require more than others.

I too enjoy my own company but I guess I won't have too much of that soon.

Holy cow I love my own company. Most of the time. I love my family and friends, but I love my solitude more.
I wouldn't say it's an arrogant or selfish viewpoint at all. For some, solitude is a necessity.

I do, but at heart I have to say I'm a gregarious person. But there is nothing wrong with either types. I certainly can use more peace and quiet myself.

I was seeking solitude, and I got it, so much so that it turned into loneliness. There is a thin line. One must know when it is about to make you lonely. Having said that, I enjoy my own company, as my other self is always in agreement with me and I am at peace

Madhuri don't worry I have too many people around me to get loneliness :-)

And I don't suffer much from loneliness though.

I could walk through a forest and feel completely happy :-)

    It's in my nature I guess.... :-)

It's good to know you can be happy in your own company.

I know feel people - family and friends who can't bear to be on their own for five minutes!

I like to think (right or wrongly) that to be able to enjoy your own company is a sign of maturity as an individual.
